V5: What I've been working on recently

Posted by superpig, 02 March 2010 · 454 views

Well, I could tell you, but maybe it'd be easier just to show you.

(Let me know if you get any errors out of it. I'm aware of two issues at the moment: one, that ads don't load in IE; and two, that sometimes a page displays a generic 'something went wrong' message which goes away when you refresh. I'm fairly sure the second is something to do with an idle timeout somewhere because it only happens after nobody's touched the pages for a bit).

More to come.

EDIT: Here's another one.

Sick. Disappointed in the colors, always liked the classic black+blue. Will there be themes?

The comment links to the current comment on the regular site, is that not implemented yet?

There's a huge amount of "I found this for you!" stuff, where can I just browse?

Also, what of Journal Land?

Yes, including a black-based theme.

Correct.

There'll be loads of browsing links on the front page, plus the column down the right hand side will be filled with links to stuff.

Journals will be up to play with soon, I hope, but as you can imagine there's a lot happening right now...
Looks pretty slick, I like it.

Below the article title there's a box with a date and time ("on February 28, at 10:11:51 AM" for the example article) -- I'm assuming this is when the article was published -- but why is it a drop-down box?

I like the pagination style with the links at both top and bottom, but what will it look like with larger page-counts (say an article with 6 pages for example) in play?

You'll be able to view past revisions of the article (if any have been published) via that box.

I think it'll work OK, but if it starts getting silly I can limit it to 4 pages and use next/prev buttons.

An error occurred when trying to generate an error message. Uh, if you could tell us how you managed to get this to happen, we'd be most grateful.
[crying]

I've refreshed a few times and nothing. Hit me up on instant messenger and I might be able to figure out more.

e: Now it works but with an error page.
ee: Now it renders the whole article. Weird. Looks great, though. It'll take a lot of getting used to.

Same! Reason: Chrome! Otherwise: Sweet! [grin]

edit: Then suddenly it works in Chrome too. Hmm.
Now the whole page looks great, apart from the leaderboard ad that sticks out way to the right. I'm using 1024x600 on my netbook, so I guess it's kind of expected for ads that wide. There's an annoying bottom scrollbar appearing just because of the ad though.
You guys probably caught it just while I was deploying a new build - there's some problems with the deployment process such that the Renderer doesn't restart properly and I have to un/install a bunch of packages by hand.

Yeah, unfortunately 1024-wide resolutions are kinda below our minimum target (1280x1024). The site should still work, and the layout will scale down as much as is practical, but it's just not possible to build a single layout that can both scale down to netbook resolutions and scale up to widescreen resolutions. That said, the backend's got plenty of templating support in place, and we're planning on doing a mobile skin at some point, so maybe we can do a netbook skin too.
Very nice. I really know nothing about web development, but what are you using for all the UI goodness? Is it done using loads of javascript, silverlight, or something else?
Looks nice. Not sure about that new font in the header image.

jQuery UI apparently.
Lovely to get a sneaky preview, keep em coming!

Awwww yeeeaaahh....Black!

[that was 'sick' as in 'awesome.' BTW]
Doesn't work for me. Just sits "Waiting..."
Magnificent! I really like the new design (and this is from a die-hard "black" theme fan). I think your uls need a little margin-left, though (see the second page of the article). [smile]

Seconded in a (hopefully) constructive fashion. I thought the new logo looked a bit amateurish to be honest and at odds with the extremely professional look of everything else.

Badges still suck. Stay strong and keep the existing number ratings say I. There's a reason that the whole Garage Games thing fizzled out PDQ.

As per recent #gamedev comments, I should point out that I am also hoping for a start-again-from-1000 or zero or whatever with V5 so this is not a ratings protection thing. I couldn't really give a toss about my own as long as people keep commenting on my journal, I've just always found the existing system to do its job of making people think twice about what they post.
