Character Creation Screens

Character Creation Screens So the focus of this week is to get the character creation down. I have setup the character creation screen with placeholder art, so just wanted to get your thoughts and see if you had better ideas on how it could be done. This is the first screen you will have which will be race selection, from there you will move into the traits of the character such as the hair, face, eyes, skin, and tatoos.

There will be other basic options that will allow you to modify the gender as well as some of the most basic clothing your character will start out with. Do you feel that we should have more customization and if so what types? Do you feel the placement of objects is good? We are looking at having the world actually rendered in the background so that as the players are modifying them you can still see those things going on.... it sounds interesting but we are not fully sure what we will do with that just yet.

From that menu you will move into the skill selection process where you choose from hundreds of skills to make your set. Once complete here you will go to the finish page where you can review all of your information before you click the create button. There will be a randomize factor so that you can easily just get into the game. Again thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Looks cool sofar. If you want to feature 100th of skills, I would put them into categories (attack, defense, support .. whatever) and use the upper skill row for category selection.

the character such as the hair, face, eyes, skin, and tatoos.

Out of curiousity, do you want to modify the mesh(morph targets) or only the texture ?

Just the texture and head/body type. We will not have any modifying of the actual mesh as... i think that would be too grand of a thing for such a simple team. Least... so far. Maybe we can add it in at a later date and give everybody a free "modify your face card" or something.

Looks like it is really coming along! The first image has a Diablo 1/2 feel to it. :)

Thanks, we are working on the process of loading the world file for each race. This means that when you click on a race a world background ( with in game elements ) will load up before your eyes and give you more of a feeling of being part of the races environment.  The cool part of this is that server owners can customize these world files and make their own so it matches their servers. Say you have a mod file that creates a custom race, you can also load that in as well and see the custom race/world. Should be pretty interesting.

Working on some more screens, this is the screen where you would choose the characters you have already made or to make a new one.

This is the right answer, feature creep is evil (but makes soo much fun ) smile.png

I've experiemented with it, it isn't that hard. If you know blender blend-target (other 3d software packages will have similiar features), you can modify a single mesh by just moving the vertices around and saving this as blend (morph) target. You keep uv, bone weights etc.

Ingame:

You can load 2 or more of this blend targets and use a slider (0...1) to interpolate between them. But instead of blending between the whole meshes you can restrict it to a limited set of bones (use bone weights as filter). When building the mesh you can then use special face bones for ears, mouth, nose etc., so that you can modify the legs, arms, hands, face ingame independently. Once the character is done, convert the blended mesh into a final mesh, remove unnecessary bones and use this for rendering.

I've played around with this, it has the benefit, that you can use the generator to generate NPC (->oblivion/skyrim), which pays out if you have actually lot of different npcs running around smile.png

Looks cool, like it that the unselected character are hidden in the dark.

Thanks! We should have the actual working code done today where I will start doing actual UI art as well as element placement. The next big task is to get the worlds to load based off of the race... this should provide us with some unique style as well as give the server owners some serious power as to what their game looks like to potential players.

Looks like it is really coming along. Can't wait to see more. :)
