Add some challenge by making it so that if the building is tall/heavy/old and you dont have high technology or something along those lines, destructing a building through detonation has a chance of damaging nearby buildings.
So if you build some huge low tech buildings to make some cheap apartments, you will later have a problem destructing them if they are located in the middle of your city surrounded by some important buildings.
This could add some constraints to how the city develops, so instead of rebuilding you are more likely to create a new 'center' for the city, leaving the old one to slowly become worthless enough that you can just plow over it.
It's not detonation, it's just what happens when enemies destroy a building.
