Animation showcase -- annotations fixed

Posted by Lactose!, 24 July 2014 · 612 views

Another YouTube update, showing off some of the new animations and movement improvements we've done.

As you might notice compared to the previous video, we're now using a higher framerate for the animations, giving it a much more fluid look. This is also more representative for how the finished game will end up being, when we transition to using proper 3D models and animation data directly, instead of pre-rendered to 2D sprites.

There's a whole bunch of animations in the video, and I've annotated them to show what they are meant, in case it isn't obvious.

Some keen observers might, well, observe some graphical glitches on a few of the animations (mainly that some of them start a bit abruptly). This is due to me recording with a laptop which wasn't connected to a power source -- power saving + recording = what you see.

Updates have been a bit scarce lately, as I'm currently looking for a new place to live, which takes up a lot of time.

In the next update, I'll shine a light on what we think of the current status of the game, and what we plan to do moving forward.

As always, comments, questions and any other feedback is appreciated!

Nice vid!!

Looking forward to the gameplay

The animations are really nice overall, even if some are a little abrupt like you say. But good job anyway.

looking nice lact!

The background art is amazing!

Thanks for all the feedback :)

I just fixed the fact that annotations weren't actually displayed in the video. Silly me hit "Save" and not "Publish" on the annotations editor...

I have fallen victim to that issue as well. :)

Looking good!

Usually I don't like when games combine 2D and 3D because I think the 3D looks out of place, but in this case I think your character fits really well.

Nice background, by the way. Have you implemented collision detection with it yet?

Technically, it's still all 2D -- with rendered sprites for the characters. We're wanting to keep the same kind of feel though, so hopefully it won't be a bad mix once it's done and the 3D stuff is in there! :)

There is only very rudimentary collision at the moment. The characters collide against each other and against the level map borders. There's also some collision checking for various attacks (although it needs a lot of improvements!).

There's currently no collision throughout the level, e.g. for rocks and trees.

Oh, I thought it was real time 3D. I guess you can take that as a compliment, because the animation is very smooth for being a sprite tongue.png

Good luck with the project, looking forward for more updates.

Thank you!

Is there a new post in the near future? Excited to see more.

There's a new post with a bit more information regarding my current status now. Thanks for the interest! :)
