Windows 7

Posted by jollyjeffers, 19 June 2009 · 202 views

Well, I sort of have a PC working again.

Saturday last week my machine was working absolutely fine. Sunday morning and the boot disk apparently failed and the machine wouldn't even boot. Great.

I'd previously tried dual-booting Windows 7 on this machine (it's Vista x64 normally) and it wasn't happy at all. Then a week or two later the whole machine broke, which says to me that either Win7 is very good at spotting an error early or that it itself caused the error.

So having lost everything (maybe, I still need to try disk recovery tricks) I try installing Windows 7 to just try and get any OS up and running - just happened to have the 7 disk closer to hand.

Anyway, that simply wouldn't go anywhere - the installer randomly crashes, or it won't allow me to pick a disk...

Gave up and stuck a Vista x64 disk in... worked first time.

In short, I now have zero confidence/trust in Win7 and I will most likely stick with Vista for the foreseeable future. Kinda seems backwards to the general consensus, but I never really had any objections to Vista so I don't much care [grin]

P.S. I'm off on holiday tomorrow. I'll rebuild my machine in July and get back to some D3D11/SlimDX dev work then...

I'm a bit disappointed too seeing as I can't even get it to install.

I have an earlier beta running fine, but the RC won't install. Somehow, 35GB free isn't enough to begin installation and quite frankly I don't have the time and can't be bothered bullying it to get it to work.
you know... I had the same trouble except it was with Vista 64 Ultimate. I could never get the damn thing to install, it would always hang up, and the one time I did actually get it to boot, it corrupted my disk within minutes, then BSOD and no more boot.

For me Windows 7 installed great and has been a great experience so far. Not a single crash or freeze whereas XP would freeze a lot in games. I'm still dual booting XP and 7.

It must have something to do with a weird combination of hardware that a particular OS just doesn't like. I don't even think it's one component or another - my mboard and hard drives and video card etc. are all fine for other Vista users according to posts on newegg - but my combination just didn't take for some reason. Who knows... but I wouldn't give up on 7 just yet.
I'm too scared to install it.

I have 32 bit vista, want to go to 64 bit win7, but don't want to risk trshing my lovely HP laptop

I have an HP laptop, and it had Vista x86 on it. Then I installed Windows 7 x64 on it and I gained 9000 badass points.

I upgraded my moms machine actually since she was getting frustrated with Vista. The only trouble I ran into was finding an onboard sound card driver. The manufacturer for that is a bit lazy, and you have to go through a few hoops to find and install the driver (it's basically an XP driver that has been "fixed" to install on Vista/Win7, but it works perfectly fine).
