Introducing "The Mysterious Life of Aaron James" and v1.0.5 download

Posted by Programmer16, in Project Warehouse 13 October 2012 · 599 views

Ok, we've decided to name the game "The Mysterious Life of Aaron James" (after the main character obviously.) We've also decided to go with the episodic release and the demo is being renamed the prologue. If any bugs are found, I'll work on resolving those, but I'm going to start work on Chapter 1.

The only issue now is that episodic releases doesn't work very well with the editor. I'm thinking I'll have to make copies of the editor project at each chapter release so that I can release update to previous chapters. I'll work on that as I go though.

Anyway, here is the download for the newest version, v1.0.5:
Attached File  TheMysteriousLifeOfAaronJames.zip (750.11KB)
downloads: 79
And the walkthrough:
Attached File  Walkthrough.txt (1.18KB)
downloads: 32

I will warn you that I have changed the product name, so if you had saved games then they won't show. They still exist and can be used, but you'll have to move them manually. If you go to your My Documents folder, under Beals Software -> Games there should be a The Warehouse folder with a Saves folder and a Screenshots folder inside it; just copy these over to the The Mysterious Life of Aaron James folder.

When you first run it, it should download a new version of the bar scene and the warehouse entrance scene. By the way, you can disable the update feature, if you'd like, by passing the command line argument /noupdate /skipupdate. I tried creating a shortcut that gets installed with this, but it doesn't seem to work. I will continue to work on that.

Also, you can skip through the credits by clicking a mouse button/hitting any key (it works just like the text in the game as it is just a character talking in the middle of the screen that has been scaled to 0.

Lastly, the newest feature is the "End of Chapter" save. When you click on the door to exit the warehouse it creates a new save named "End of Chapter". This way, once the new chapter comes out you can load that save, click the door to leave and it will take off from there.

I'm investigating a lag issue; if you play the prologue from start to finish, it lags when the player is "falling" on the last scene. Once it loads the outro/credits scene, everything seems to be fine though.

As always, any and all input is welcome.

[edit]
I apologize, I lied. The command line argument to skip the update process is /skipupdate not /noupdate.

I just finished playing again from start to finish. I didn't notice anything wrong so far. I never noticed the FPS drop on the falling scene.

I would just check the draw code, it might be rendering out that scene more than once at the same time causing the slow down, but who knows? Everything works great!!

I also like the new look! Great job!!!
Great! Thanks for trying it again!

I'm not sure what's up with the FPS drop then; it's actually worse on my desktop than it is on my laptop. I'll have to run through it with the debugger and profiler to see if I can find something that's catching it up.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it!
