Sadly, I am not aware of a way to separate brain-stuff from actual brains; this means that, should I want to get brain-stuff out of my head, I would be required to also remove brains themselves. Today I've moved up from a single quad to a vertex buffer and index buffer, generating a flat mesh of several quads. The idea is to eventually turn this into a heightmapping system of sorts. Step one of course is to actually generate the mesh data.
