V5 UI directions: Advertising page

Posted by Oluseyi, 26 January 2009 · 152 views

This was supposed to show up yesterday, but I finally discovered that I don't like OS X's default mouse acceleration - apparently an exceedingly common problem that Apple has chosen to bury any and all UI for correcting. I'm evaluating alternatives to fix it.

In the meantime, here's a work-in-progress mockup of the advertising page. I had to wait to get back to the office and good old Windows to build this; I'm starting to get the hang of Fireworks, and the final version should be much better. Again, this is just layout; the colors are NOT representative of design direction. I will follow this post up within a day or two with the finished version, still grayscale.

An idea I'm toying with is making direct buys much, much easier. Visit our advertising page, upload your creatives, specify the durations you want, provide your account/payment info and wait for approval. The rounded boxes that read "Upload Asset" would be nicely AJAX-ified forms that you click in and get the file browser and can upload in-page, but it would be nice if they could also support drag and drop events. We'll see. Some of you might remember when Ethereal Darkness Interactive purchased ads on GameDev in support of the release of Morning's Wrath; this would have made it a snap for both parties (because we wouldn't have needed to process a manual transaction, nor would we need to manually insert their buys into the inventory, which is what I think happened then).

Anyway, feedback welcome. I'll be finishing this page up and then moving on to the Events calendar, which I think you will all really enjoy. [smile]

I thought you didn't like Windows' default mouse acceleration. If it's just OS X, do what Promit did and install AppleUSBMouse Turbo Edition or another similar Mac OS X mouse driver. I used the Microsoft Intellipoint one for awhile.

I installed the Intellipoint driver yesterday, but I haven't really locked in the feel I want. I'll try USBMouse Turbo when I get home, thanks.
It might be a good idea to include a "start date" for the ads as well. Also there is the possibility that the client may want to have multiple sets of images or, say, 2 different skyscraper sized images for a bit of variety. Could be nice to allow them to add them all at once instead of making several transactions (especially since, and I am assuming here, multiple transactions means more money and higher viewing chance). Other than that this page looks great.

Oh, and something that would be nifty for the person submitting is a preview of what, say, the front page would look like with the ads on it. It probably isn't worth the effort to create said preview but it would help with creating ads that fit with the site.

One last though is allowing ads to be section specific. Say allowing ads to be displayed on only the forum or only the front page. Not sure how important that would be to clients but it is something to ponder. That way there are different price brackets for the ads (whole site, front page, forums, etc).

I suppose I am slightly off topic here, but since the new site design is in development it would be easier to implement any of this stuff now than after it is live.
