New Programmer Art

I'm in need of taking a little break from coding, so there is nothing better as doing some programmer art instead. Trying my best at a new creature for my game, the ratman warrior thingy. Here's the first model attempt:

And a turntable :

Look'n good, I just have to ask whats the deal with the back of the neck, why does it stick up like that?

Not bad at all. Obviously some optimization that you could work on but for the most part a very clean and sleek looking mesh. I agree that the neck seems a bit out of place. Perhaps you can increase the size of the shoulders to make it more... appealing? I like it though, well done!

*scratching my head* yeah, I think you both are right. Currently I'm revisiting the mesh and I will address the back too, thx :-)

A lot of the confusion could be because of the position. Perhaps once the model is in the game it will be more appealing to have such a thing. Or maybe add the hair/main part, which I think is what you might have gone for. I think this look is very common with the gnoll type of monster so I get the concept... I just feel it needs to be fleshed out a bit more to make it really fit. That said, i really think this is a very good model and envy your ability to code and do art.

I think that you have a point here. Gnolls have such a hunchback too, but the shoulder/back part are somewhat weird. Maybe I do a quick rig and put him in an other pose before going to texture him.

I really have no talent, it is all about practice. People accept that artists are able to write some decent shader, but coder refuse to do some decent art. It is really just learning by doing and I'm the living proof that an untalented coder is able to go beyond typical programmer art, even if it would need much more training to reach the masterful level of a dedicated artist.

It's a nice rat. It looks like it is created by a dedicated artist. Some people are wasting their talent, some people have the will to work hard even if they aren't so talented. There are also people that are talented in more than one thing at the same time. In fact, I remember reading somewhere that if a person is talented in one thing, there is a good chance they are gifted in other things too.
I for one consider myself more of an artist than a programmer but i wish to program much more.
