Wankers

Posted by __Homer__, 05 December 2011 · 311 views

Now my current score on this crap forum is minus 2 - after they agreed minus scored would not happen.
Can i reach - 666? :)

Yours Truly, for saying nothing more than the truth.

If there's anything I've learned on GDNet, it's that posting about your "score" will only make things worse. Just a friendly bit of advice.
sodden wankers gettin leary every time they see'n a dash na.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that you're willing to publicly call people wankers, or to call a very experienced programmer a doofus whilst not providing any actual rational for why your suggested alternative might be better than his suggestion, or because you appear to be overly concerned with your reputation and keep posting about it rather than simply trying to be helpful and seeing if it improves.

What the site actually implemented by the way, was that negative scores would not be displayed in the forum next to posts so that a negative reputation won't stop people from taking a genuinely helpful post into consideration -- they're still tracked and displayed in the profile, they always have been, and it was never suggested by the site staff that it would be otherwise. You can see this if you look at a topic you've posted in -- at the time of my posting you have a reputation of -5, but in forum topics it is simply displayed as zero.

My advice:
Don't be so sensitive about your reputation score, and focus on being helpful rather than complaining about being rated down -- if you're genuinely helpful your reputation will go up over time.
Consider why you might have been rated down -- in the case I linked to above, you disagreed with an experienced programmer who was making a sensible suggestion, didn't bother to explain why you disagreed with him, and resorted to petty name-calling; it's not really unreasonable that you might be voted down for that particular post -- it might be worth examining if other posts that have been voted down exhibit similar problems.
Heh! Nothing shows how much you care about your reputation than posts like these. Get over it, man. It's a little number.

And please don't call us wankers.
6/10

Needs moar whine.
My reputation ? grins
I'll be making games while these posers demote me on their petty commercial advertising driven site
see you in the gdc financials
for the record, ive been programming for 25 years
this all started when i helped a few people and got demoted for doing that?
then its basically been downhill from there
anyone who wants help will have to seek me out now, they probably filter my posts but i did point to another site where ive been looking after game and physics stuff for a decade or so
have a nice day
no good turn goes unpunished here
the vp of epic games thought our little jousting game was cool, but wanted us to rewrite it using their engine lol, wheres our free license? hint
yeah, gcap was fun, met lots of actually interesting people, got funded, and smiled a lot, and its still not even the end of the year lol
You seem to care a lot about this.

As I said, I've not really looked into it any further than a couple of posts, but in the first one I found where you had your reputation decreased:
- You disagreed with a DirectX MVP's (correct) suggestion for how to solve a DirectX-related problem.
- You didn't provide any reasoning as to why you disagreed or why your alternative might be better.
- You called him a "doofus".

It's your own fault you copped those down votes -- you acted like an ass, and you weren't helpful. You may be completing games (great, congratulations!), and you may have lots of experience, but those things won't stop people -- don't forget also it isn't the site that is voting down your reputation, it's other users just like you -- from down-voting rude and unhelpful posts.

If you don't like this site and can't handle the fact that you're going to be down-voted when you act like a tool there's always the option of leaving -- no one is forcing you to participate in our community. If you really hate this place that much just save all the drama and leave; if not, I'd suggest you get over whining about your reputation -- which isn't actually all that bad compared to some others and as far as I can tell is completely deserved -- and go about helping people.

Why not send him/her a link to this journal entry? I'm sure that would convince him/her to work with you.
Why are you guys still feeding this troll?
Interesting observations, i would prefer that the down votes carry a post, so that there is no doubt about it.
If we are going to support negatives, we should see clearly that it was not the establishment who demoted us?
And I thought we already agreed that we would not support negative rep? I was sent to a discussion where this was clearly not going to occur.
Sure, I can hang out somewhere else, this is not very representative of independent game development, and has no links to organizations who are based on that premise. But did you review all the posts I made? Was I generally obnoxious, or singularly so? My rep will do very well outside this small space, I have no doubt.
I want more fanboy feelgood points! lol seriously? its not about the points, its about the lack of common courtesy, yeah i did stick it to one or two people - who clearly, in context, deserved it ! I don't apologize and I don't expect an apology, i want truth and honesty and an open forum with no preclusion ?

But did you review all the posts I made? Was I generally obnoxious, or singularly so?

As I already said (twice in fact), I only looked at a couple of your posts, and my observations were based on only one in particular.

In that particular post, you disagreed with a subject matter expert who was providing what is actually a correct solution, and whom you called a "doofus", and you didn't bother to explain why you were disagreeing.

I have not looked at your other posts in general, but in that particular case you were rude, you were not helpful to the OP, you added nothing useful to the discussion, and you absolutely deserved to have that particular response down-voted. If you really think you were "sticking it to someone who deserved it" (to paraphrase) in that case, then you're never going to find what you want here, because your view of your own behaviour and of the behaviour of others is vastly different than the reality of the actual situation.

In any case, responding to this is becoming repetitive and is using up time I could spend elsewhere, so I won't be checking back or responding again.

I'm hoping you do actually care and might realise that your behaviour can in fact be improved, but if that is not the case at least people can see that someone has tried to help you out -- this isn't some big unfair system that you're trying to make it out to be, and it would actually take very little effort on your part to restore your reputation on this site -- all you would need to do is work on being more polite, stop ranting about how the system is unfairly persecuting you (it really isn't!), and consider whether you're actually being helpful when you respond.

Good luck to you!
Thanks for your mini-rant. You took the time to notice there is a problem here. I'm not wasting another moment on this, I have paid work to do.

If anyone wants to take me to task for my posts, or ask what I would have done differently, seek me out.
