Times they are a changing. |
Posted - 2/18/2006 9:03:35 PM | Well, I started school on thursday. The first class, that is required for all online students, is an orientation class, and it's going good so far. I'm kind of surprised at the workload associated with the orientation class, but I suppose they really just want to get you used to working within the environment. It's structured so that you sign onto a secure server and the class discussions are handled through message boards. You simply complete your assignments, attach them to a class blog area, or send them to the instructor, and then discuss the course work. I think it'll work out well for me, but I know time managment is going to be a hudge issue.
Another big thing going on in my life right now has to do with my son. I'm having to deal with a bunch of legal stuff in regards to custody and this is beginning to be a bit trying on me. It's a very complicated situation, but effectively it comes down to I've tried to do nothing but do what's best for my son, and work with his mother, but she has a lot some emotional and mental problems and instead of seeing my suggestions , such as suggesting she hires a lawyer for when we go to court, she simply assumes I'm attacking her and just goes off the wall. In this instance, she's kind of uneducated and expects the situation to unfold like an episode of Judge Judy, and I've tried to explain to her that real court isn't like that, but she refuses to become educated on the subject or think about changing her opinion, which pretty much sums up her additude about life. She is very closed minded. Which quite frankly scares the shit out of me, for my sons sake. Anyways, we'll be going to court within the next few weeks, which will be a good thing, because I've only seen my son twice in last nine months, and infact he's in another state with her parents. Essentially, I've had no say so what so ever in his raising thus far, even though I've wanted to, but if I went against her belief structures, she would not allow me to see him, and I wish things weren't the way they are, but that's how things have unfolded. I have learned a lot of important lessons along the way though. Enough of this though, I just needed to vent on it a bit.
Things have been rather slow at work this last few weeks, which has been very nice. I've gotten to be a little lazy, and get some things done for phoenix. I was thinking of releasing the documentation and source as I go along, but I may not end up doing this as I'm not sure if I will possibly want to use the engine for commercial use later on. I may end up just releasing snippets, but I need to get a bit deeper into the project first. I'm currently working on getting the vector math correct for my entities, and while I could simply implement it I'm trying to make sure I understand it all. So, hopefully, I'll have that completed tonight.

 Pains , Change, & Hellauvadeals |
Posted - 2/14/2006 7:05:50 PM | Hum.. Well after many hours of fighting with my new laptop (A TOTotal of probably ten hours in the last two days) I'm finally able to access the internet, without having to plug it into my router directly. This wouldn't be such a big idea except it kind of goes against the entire idea of having baught this laptop in the first place(mobility). I unfortunately had to resort to using connection sharing from my development box for the time being, so that I can do software downloads and updates, until the new wireless card gets here. I already had a Belkin wireless usb adapter, but for one reason or another I couldn't get it to work with the laptop which is a Compaq Evo n610c. I searched for a solution for hours, but couldn't find one, so I grabbed a wireless card off of ebay for just under tweleve dollars. The whole ordeal has been enough to make me want to throw this laptop against the wall, but then I'd be out five hundered bucks, that I probably shouldn't have spent on this thing in the first place. I am hoping that it'll allow me to write and code more though, as well as allow me to get out of the basement everyonce and a while on nice days.
Well, I haven't worked on my engine for a while. To tell you the truth I've been obsessed with upgrading and purchasing shit, which is kind of rediculous, but it's something that I usually do about once or twice a year, and it does keep me interested in things too. I start school on Thursday, which will be fun. I had to take a placement test last week, and over all I did pretty well. I'm kind of pissed though because I scored pretty bad on my math, worse then I should have, so now I have to retake courses that I took in highschool. It's only a six week course though, so it isn't all bad, and the refresher will probably be nice.
It's sixty degrees in Iowa today, damn global warming strikes again. Everyone go out and burn as much fossil fuel as possible , as I want beach front property , but I don't want to move. Come on everybody, help me out and do your part, grab a pile of used diapers, dowse them in gasoline, throw on some styrafoam and aresole cans, strike a match, and stand back. I'm actually pissed there hasn't been much of a winter this year, I like the diversness of weather that usually is prevailent around here. Memories.
Well, I suppose I should get back to putting software on this thing and check on my school shit and make sure everythings cool.

 Downtime |
Posted - 2/4/2006 8:25:17 AM | I've managed to have more time off in the past two weeks then I have in the last six months from my job. This is excellent considering for the first four months I probably only had a total of a weeks time off, total. Anyways, this has allowed me to spend a lot of time on my projects, and to do nothing, which has been nice for a change, even though I've still not really been doing nothing, it's just nice to know that I could do nothing.
I haven't gotten that much done with my game engine the past week, but I still have been making progress, I also order some books from Amazon, that should be here next week, to add to my game development collection that should help out. The two books I'm most excited about are :
Essential Mathematics for Games and Interactive Applications, First Edition : A Programmer's Guide (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Interactive 3D Technology) (Hardcover)
and
3D Game Engine Architecture, First Edition : Engineering Real-Time Applications with Wild Magic (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Interactive 3D Technology) (Hardcover)
I'm more excited about the latter, as I'm hoping it'll help me figure out some questions that I've been running into, that I haven't been able to find the answers to online, such as advanced camera controls. I'm just hoping that my time's not going to be completely eaten up by work and school once school starts.
I could post a screen shot for you guys, but I'm going to wait a little longer unitl I get some additional functionality into the engine, which, after reading for a few hours, I'll get right on top of, for sure.
