 ## Hi |
Posted - 12/30/2005 12:07:59 PM | Okay my journal has been re-opened as well.
I understand that mocking Raymond in closing my journal was a rather childish thing to do. Not something a mature person would partake in. After I slept on it I woke up with a clearer head. Yesterday, lots of shit went down. Let's just forget it happened and move on.
Yes, I'm a cynical bastard. I do not apologize for critisizing some of the things he does, I was only leaving my feedback and my opinions. If he took them as personal attacks, he'll need to get over that.
However. I do apologize to Raymond for being lame and mocking him through the hard time yesterday. That was bad on me. All of us, really.
Damian is here for a week so I won't get much done. Wait, do I ever get much done? Oh well.

 ## No mo ho ho ho |
Posted - 12/28/2005 11:44:01 AM | Well as you can see, Christmas is gone. No more Christmas theme on the GDNet website. No more Christmas theme in my journal. It was fun while it lasted.
I was contemplating coming up with another theme for my journal, or for the gdnet website, but I just don't know. We'll see, i just need to get smacked with a creativity bat.
I think I'm going to start working on my next game soon. I've been thinking about some gameplay mechanics lately, but one of the things that has been on my mind a lot is how I am going to build the levels. I'm not sure if I want to use a heightmap, if I want to just use a flat ground, if I want to actually model the entire level, if I want to try to randomize the levels, etc... Lots of possibilities, but only a few actually seem feasible to me at the moment. We'll see.
As soon as I get more information and a basic structure laid out, I will let everyone know what the game is. I'd hate to say "My game is this!" and when I go to describe it, only have one or two sentences.
Anyway, mashed potatoes.

 ## Bah, humbug |
Posted - 12/24/2005 3:57:20 AM |
I want to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy holidays.
I've done nothing on the coding front since two post below. I've run into a few personal problems that have just been eating me alive. I find myself not wanting to code, play games, chat, use the computer, watch tv, or anything else. I just can't get my mind off of this one thing.
Unfortunately, this certain situation has really dwindled my Christmas spirit and i've been a real grump as of late, so I've really been in a "Bah, humbug" mood, which sucks. I created a Christmas journal theme, a Christmas gamedev.net theme, put the lights up on my house, all of it in a Christmas mood. But as of the other day, it's all gone. I don't want Christmas to come, I just want everything and everyone to go away.
This sucks.
Once again, Merry Christmas everyone. I hope you have a safe and wonderful holiday season.

 ## Kong King |
Posted - 12/22/2005 3:03:17 AM | Okay I just saw King Kong, and all I have to say is this...
I want that three hours and two dollars of my life back.
(yes, it was only two dollars, thank God I didn't waste more than that on the movie)

 ## Reflectious |
Posted - 12/20/2005 12:37:02 AM | Alright so I decided to figure out how to use the stencil buffer. So far, all I can do with it is planar reflections (one of the easiest implementation of the stencil buffer)

 ## WTS 3xHO (Ho, Ho, Ho) |
Posted - 12/18/2005 12:54:04 PM | Sooooooooooo as you can see, I worked it out with the gods at GDNet to use my Christmas journal theme as the GDNet default theme. Wheeeeeeeeeee!
Looks damn good, if I do say so myself.
Superpig was in charge of converting it over to the full GDNet layout. There are a few minor problems with it. On the main page, one of the section header graphics still has some blue in it, and the menu up top doesn't work as well as it does in my journal, and the links aren't green with a red underline. HOWEVER it still looks fan-fucking-tastic!
Thanks GDNet! :D :D :D

 ## No more Lazteroids? WTF! |
Posted - 12/16/2005 11:54:07 AM | Few things. First off, a team of modders have redome the original "Knee Deep in the Dead" episode (the shareware episode of Doom) using Doom 3 technology. I know what I will be doing all night today. Listening to the music for E1M8 right now ... and all I can say is "holy fucking yes!"
Check it out here. Just kidding, here. Ha ha, got you again. Click here --> . <-- right there.
Now, more importantly, the title of this post. I have decided to indefinitely cease development on Lazteroids 2. I've been working on it for a year and gotten almost nothing done.
It dawned on me the other night, as I was talkign with Ravuya, I hate Lazteroids 2. I can't stand working on it, I hate thinking about it. It's boring to me now, I don't want to do it anymore.
I do have a better project in the works now. Without revealing too much information, it does involve jets. Fighter jets. It will be good if I don't pull another "Lazteroids 2" and work on it for a year then get tired of it.
Still thinking of a name.
But, before I start on that, I want to expant my knowledge. I'm going to start creating simple demos to teach myself the basic of things like shadowing and reflections and shaders and whatnot. I realized that pretty much all I know how to do in OpenGL is draw polygons on the screen. I know nothing of stencil tests, extensions, shaders, etc... so I'm going to teach myself some of that stuff before I get started on the project.

 ## Peanuts |
Posted - 12/15/2005 1:09:19 PM | I got bored.

Click it.
Yes, it's really a maze. Has a start, a finish, and only one path from said start to finish.
That's a 100x100. I tried a 1000x1000 but my work computer couldn't handle it.
Some of the walls near the center don't show up since they're right in line with the camera and the walls are just polygons, so that's why it looks weird. But I assure you they're there.
For some reason I decided to call the project Erdnüsse ... which is German for Peanuts (i believe). I don't know why, was just the first random word I could think of.

 ## Random code |
Posted - 12/13/2005 2:27:21 PM | I was recently talking with a good friend of mine about how she likes PHP over C++ because of it's ease of usability. In this case, string manipulation. C++ doesn't have a split functio nto split strings by a deliminator, which PHP does, so it's handy. In discussing with her various ways of accomplishing such a task, I decided to write a small function to do it.
Now I know there are those of you out there who will look at this code and see fifty better ways of doing it, or some will look at it and say "There's already a way of doing that," or will look at it and say "That's not very optimized." Or any other plethora of things. But, I don't care. It wasn't written to be optimized, I didn't write it the best way possible, or anything like that, simply because I'm not the best. I'm a mediocre programmer who was just doing this as a test for myself to see if I could successfully write a split function for strings. So without further ado, here it is.
EDIT: I just noticed there was some old code that doesn't need to be there. It's better now.
#include <string>
#include <vector>
#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
vector<string> split(char sep, const string &str);
void main() {
string rooms = "Room 1;Room 1 Description;Exits;Parameter 4;Fuck off!";
vector<string> roominfo;
roominfo = split(';', rooms);
for (int i = 0; i < (int)roominfo.size(); i++)
cout << roominfo[i] << endl;
}
vector<string> split(char sep, const string &str)
{
static const basic_string <char>::size_type npos = -1;
string strCopy = str;
vector<string> tmpString;
size_t position;
position = strCopy.find_first_of(sep);
while (position != npos) {
tmpString.push_back(strCopy.substr(0, position));
strCopy.erase(0, position + 1);
position = strCopy.find_first_of(sep);
}
tmpString.push_back(strCopy);
return tmpString;
}
I know, not the most glamorous, but it works wonderfully.
The outcome on her progress getting it done is, she got her own code working without having to look at mine. Her project is well off on it's way and I'm quite proud of her for what she's been able to accomplish thus far. She's learning quite well. :-)

 ## Argh |
Posted - 12/12/2005 11:08:25 AM | They screwed with the CSS again, making my colored menus up top not working. Argh I say!
EDIT: Okay I fixed it again. GDNet people, if you're reading this, the CSS was fine as it was. The new way is extremely hacked, messy and not very friendly.
My fix isn't perfect, there's still a 1px problem on the right side of the submenus that I can't seem to fix. Also, this new CSS looks like hell in IE, as there's a blank menu to the left of "Features" ... Argh I say!
EDIT Part DEUX: okay that 1px problem is fixed. You see, part of my beef with the new menus, apart from the actual CSS code itself, is that you can't click on the whole cell to go to wherever you're trying to go. You have to actually click on the TEXT of the menu. That's not a very user-friendly menu. Argh I say!
