I like this version of Yoda better than George Lucas's:

I managed to get GeSHi installed on lameware.com so now I can view syntax hilighted source, and it's seamless with apache. For instance: My CSingleton class.

Notice how it's not some wonky-ass URL such as http://www.lameware.com/viewsource.php?file=/CSingleton.cpp. Good times.

So Nintendo unveiled Revolution finally. I don't care, call me a fanboy if you want, but I like it. It looks prettier than the 360 and the PS3.

Pictures here

I hope the system will work lying down rather than standing up, because I just think it'd look better than way. And I hate that stupid silver stand it has. It makes it look like the console was cut with some funky angles on it.

It's only "two to three" times faster than the Gamecube, whereas the 360 is 13-15 times faster than XBox and PS3 is roughly 35 times faster than PS3, but that doesn't really mean much. Games might be prettier, but are they as fun?

For as long as Nintendo has been around, they've made good games. They might not be on top of the "ohhh that looks so real and the physics are psnage!!ONE!", but Nintendo has plenty of classics that keep me going back such as Mario and Zelda.

Revolution does have some cool things going for it though.

"we do know that the system will house 512 MB of flash memory; a dual-format front-loading disc drive which handles both DVDs and GCN-format discs; wireless controllers; two USB 2.0 ports; and built-in Wi Fi support."

That is pretty cool, but the thing that really grabs my attention is this:

"the Revolution will give players access to Nintendo's back catalog of games. That's right: you'll be able to download classic titles for the Nintendo 64, Super NES, and original NES systems -- in addition to playing your library of GameCube titles."

All I can say is, if it works as good as it sounds, then HELL FUCKING YES. Also, free online play! WOOHOO!

I'm just looking forward to actual hardware specs.

And on a side note, Nintendo is making _another_ GBA. I wish they'd quit redesigning the GBA and make a new one already. (for those who are going to say "They did, it's called the DS." Nintendo had previously stated that the DS isn't a new GameBoy system.)

And on ANOTHER side note... mmmmm Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess ... *drool* I love it.

Yes, I sound like a fanboy. Oh well. I will be buying a PS3 and a Revolution. 360 can die. :) What the fuck is up with the PS3 controller?!

Okay so I was in a bad mood last night and was half asleep, i guess I should have said wehat I said about the PS3 without reading the article instead of just skimming over it.

I am impressed by the PS3. I've seen some videos of what it can do, and I must say, I want one now. It's not going to be a "media center" as much as I thought it was going to be, thankfully.

And yes stompy, I do have a PSP. I take it almost everywhere I go (besides work). It's actually a nice little system to have.

Two things.

One... Look what I bought!

Two... Sony announced the PS3 today. I'm not impressed. I retract my previous statement about being semi-impressed by the XBox 360 as well. I might be the only one with this opinion, but god damnit I don't want to buy a fucking media center. I want to play video games. Not listen to music on it or watch DVDs. That is why I have a DVD player and a CD player. Neither one of those play video games, so why should my console do what they do. If they put all their effort into video game entertainment instead of 75% games and 25% everything else, then the gaming part would be that much better. Damnit. I don't want a flippin media center.

I'm bored and can't sleep. I had a horrible headache today so around 8pm I said "screw it" and went to sleep. Well it is now 1:45am, the damn cat woke me up, and now I can't sleep.

I did it again today. I opened my compiler and just stared at my code. Didn't actually write anything. Joy.

I've really got nothing to write about...

I fixed my journal. I didn't realize that in IE it stretched for like 40000 pixels, but I found out why and fixed it. My apologies.

Among all the hype of the XBox 360, there are few of us who, well, just aren't that excited about it. I will say, however, that I am impressed, just not enough to go "YAY!" about it.

I hated the original XBox. The controller was huge and the buttons were placed on the controller by monkeys, the system was huge and ugly, and (I know everyone hates this) ... it was nothing more than a computer.

The XBox 360 changes some of this. But before I get into that, let's talk about the name. Am I the only one that thinks the XBox 360 is a stupid name for this machine? Just hear me out before you roll your eyes and leave. XBox 360.

How many times do you think of a BOX when someone says 360? I, for one, think of a complete circle. Yes, all of the angles of a box together add up to 360 degrees, but it's just not what comes to mind when someone mentions 360. And then there's the logo. Lets evaluate:

Original XBox logo. Not that bad, in my opinion. It could very well be an X being split open off of a box. It's a flat surface, right? It could be on one of the sides of a box.

Not a box. It's a sphere. If you want to use a sphere in your logo and append "360" to the end, common sense would say, "Let's call it the XSPhere 360!"

Okay, stupid point to make, I know, it just bugged me. Lets look at the system itself. The original was huge, bulky, and extremely ugly. The new one, not so much. It's pleasent compared to the previous XBox (doesn't mean I like it, more on that later). Lets take a looksie:

ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, but hey, at least it's a box!

Hmm. Prettier than the previous one, but ... it's not really a box, is it? Okay, I suppose it does look like a box that has been sent through UPS. They give me plenty of dented boxes.

Now I dont particularly like the look ofthe new one. Granted, it is much better than the first XBox, but I just don't care for the shape of this one. And the big green ring stands out like a sore thumb on a silver system. The eject button is on the LEFT ofthe tray. Every CD-Rom, DVD-Rom, DVD-Player, CD-Player and game system I have ever owned has had the eject button on the RIGHT side of the tray ... not the left. If you don't like the color of the system, you can skin it. That's right, you can put new color on it! Here are some pictures:

Well. Okay so you can put a face plate on the front of it so your system looks like a retard with a mask on. Yeah, real slick there!

Okay I'll stop critisizing the machine now. Wireless controller out of the box? Nice. USB ports on a console seems to be almost standard now (unless you're the big N).

Now lets talk about the guts of it. The insides actually impressed me. The 20GB (upgradable) Hard Drive is nice, and is a nice step up from the 8GB of the past. Now Microsoft owns the chip designs of the system so the prices aren't so hefty for them to get the chips, which is good, because it'll help drop the price by a few bucks. They're using a watercooled multicore CPU which I think will drastically improve performance and the games will be much prettier (expecially since Microsoft has a MINIMUM requirement for all games to meet [2x antialiasing!]). The graphics chips has 48 parallel pipelines which should be smpokin fast. Woot.

The XBox Live service suprised me when it first came out. I was so sure that it would fail, but it didn't. The whole "Broadband only" is a huge turnoff, and the fact that they were charging for the service was another, especially while Sony was offering theirs for free, and it even worked on dialup. Not only that, but the features it had made me jealous that the PS2 didn't have some of that stuff. The XBox 360 is keeping XBox Live, and adding improvements. They'll have two plans for us. One is free, which only lets you play MMO's (provided you pay the monthly fee forthe MMO), and the other is pay which lets you play all the other normal multiplayer games online. The only letdown here is that broadband is still required. Fishsticks.

Well, despite my hatred for the XBox, the 360 has impressed me. I won't be buying it, simply because I'm not a fan of the XBox, and I have yet to see any games released for the first XBox that make me want to own the system (Other than Conker .... damn you Microsoft for taking my game away from the N!). But it should actually be a good system this time around, and one that I won't bash so hard this generation. Though I still think that the PS3 will do better than the XBox 360. And here's hoping that the big N will pull through this time. From what has been said, sounds like they might actually do it.

I'm going to go eat some donuts now.

Alright I feel I should give a little info on the project that I am currently working on. I've mentioned here it and there in previous posts, but I will cover most of it here in this post.

When I was in Full Sail, one of our projects was to make a basic game that were comprised of a good guy, a bad guy, and bullets. It was basically our first assignment at a game that wasn't pong. They called it the "Asteroids Clone" project even though it didn't have to be an asteroids clone. Well, being the unimaginitive type, I made ..... An asteroids clone. Thus was born, Lazteroids.

(Screenshots, click to enlarge)

The game is actually pretty fun, and it has some cool music to it. It has its bugs, and in the next version I hope to work those out.

Well, I want to make Lazteroids 2 a cross between Lazteroids and Crimsonland. I like the movement and aiming style of Crimsonland (Move with WASD/Arrows, aim with mouse), so I'm going to do that. I also like the fast paced gameplay of it, which I'm also going to try to implement.

The following is a small game document I wrote up for it, but I'm not sure how close to this I'm actually going to stick, but I'll try to keep it as close to this as possible:

[[[[[[[[[]]]]]]]]]
[] Lazteroids 2 []
[[[[[[[[[]]]]]]]]]

Objective
---------
Create a simple top-town space shooter rendered in full 3D
graphics, as a follow-up to my school project, Lazteroids.

Game Description
----------------
You are in charge of any of three ships, and you must fly through
space, eliminating the asteroid threat, while keeping the evil
space alien UFOs at bay. Each ship has a different weapon, each
with three upgrades available, the third being a missile attack.
Progressing through the game will unlock different paint schemes
for your ship. Paint jobs and weapons can be purchased with the
asteroid shards left behind.

Game Mechanics
--------------
The player will operate the ship using WASD for movement, and
using the mouse to aim and fire. Primary fire is used with your
left mouse button, and alternate fire (when unlocked) will be
handled by your right mouse button.

In the main game, each round will have a set number of enemies,
every round having 25% more than the previous round. Every 3
rounds you will encounter a “Rush" mode where you have two
minutes to survive an onslaught of oncoming asteroids and UFOs.

The Ships
---------
-[Ship name 1]-

· Primary Fire 1: Alternating fire of two guns
· Primary Fire 2: Alternating fire of four guns, increased
      rate
· Alternate Fire: Goofy Missiles

-[Ship name 2]-
· Primary Fire 1: Two machine guns
· Primary Fire 2: Four machine guns
· Alternate Fire: Standard Missiles

-[Ship name 3]-
· Primary Fire 1: Two burst fire guns (three shots per burst)
· Primary Fire 2: Four burst fire guns (four shots per burst)
· Alternate Fire: Chaser Missiles

The Targets
-----------
-[Asteroid]-
· Floats in space, sometimes breaking into two smaller ones
      upon destroying.
· No attacks

-[UFO 1]-
· Wanders around aimlessly, shooting if you get near
· Standard single shot gun

-[UFO 2]-
· Wanders around aimlessly, shooting if you get near, has
      longer range
· Three-Burst Gun

-[UFO 3]-
· Set to seek you out and destroy you
· Machine Gun

I don't have much in the way of screenshots, other than these two. One just shows my mouse cursor working and the other just shows model loading working. I promise to have more in the future. Click to enlarge:

So there you have it. My current project, Lazteroids 2.

I'm going to start looking at books to buy on game development. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be much appreciated. (I'm an OpenGL kind of guy, btw, so I'm not too interested in Direct3D API books).

I'm going to try to start working on Lazteroids 2 a bit more actively. I don't know how, but I'm going to try.

I wish I knew WHY I couldn't focus on things I want to do. I come home from work and usually end up just starting Visual Studio and staring at my code for a moment, then get sidetracked by either a game, or a website, or something of that matter. I really want to get Lazteroids 2 done, but I can't.

I'm usually hard on myself about things I do. I suck at everything, blah blah blah. But there are these times where I look at what I *HAVE* made. I made a really sweet tile editor and a display engine to go along with it. It's tile based. We used it for a megaman clone in school. It could easily be made to make ANY tile-based 2D platformer, really. It's pretty good. I also made a swift lookin particle editor (though it's very basic, wish I could make a more advanced one. Maybe for Lazteroids 2 I will try). I made a sweet tile-based track editor that can create a random track. I was part of an extremely cool final project for Full Sail. I made a cool asteroids clone (Lazteroids) for school in less than a week (We had two, but I procrastinated). I just recently made a nice maze generator that looks spiffy. I could also get into the awesomeness PHP scripts that I have written, but now it sounds like I'm arrogant, so i'll shut up about that.

The point is, the things that I *do* make, aren't that bad. When I get around to it, I'm actually good at what I do. But until that gets done, I'm extremely hard on myself and can't find any motivation to do it.

Some might say "Write down what you want to do in pieces, break it out." Well that's easier said than done. And even if I did, that doesn't mean i'd be motivated enough to actually tackle that list.

Sometimes I blame all this on the chance that I might have Adult ADD. I do have the symptoms of it, and my mother has questioned whether she has it or not. We have al ot of the same symptoms. Easily distracted, not much motivation a lot of times, can't concentrate. I don't know, maybe I should try to get tested for it when the insurance from work kicks in, but that doesn't mean it'd fix anything. *IF* I do have it, there i no cure for it. It's not like I can take Ridalin(sp?) or something for it. It's a nasty beast that I need to tackle on my own. Some people even argue of the existance of such a thing. "Adult ADD, peh. You're just lazy and don't have any self discipline." Yeah, I've heard it before. It's different when you see things from my point of view though.

Maybe if my life were perfect things would be different. Having a job that I love, having a marriage that is argument free, never having to worry about financial stuff, making sure family is okay, etc etc... It's a lot of stress at times and sometimes I think the stress doesn't go away. I feel better, but does that mean that it's actually gone? Or is it still eating away at me? I don't know. Stress sucks. Maybe being stress-free would help clear my mind and help me focus. Who knows.

This journal entry was supposed to be about something completely different, but it turned into this. I promise next time I will have something more interesting. For those of you who stayed and read all of this, thanks for listening, much appreciated.

Take care.

So if you didn't notice, I have some leet ascii at the top of my journal now. You can click on it if you want. It's random every time the page loads. I think it's pretty cool.

I also made this

Be generous with it, please. I'd rather if you didn't crash my hosts servers. It's set to a max of 100x100 right now. I will lower it if I have to. It can render higher (I managed a 500x500, but it killed my browser because of all of the CSS and table cells it had to render). It's kind of cool, if you ask me. I'm quite proud of it.

That is really all I have to say now. Pretty boring weekend. I didn't get a chance to work on my truck, unfortunately.
