 ## And so it was... kinda |
Posted - 6/29/2005 4:45:27 PM | So I spent my morning at work doing some research on parts for my new computer. Here's what I came up with:
Computar!
Note, it's not done. I will probably need an aftermarket heatsink for the processor, and still need a case and a *beefy* power supply (500W+).

 ## NOTHIN! |
Posted - 6/27/2005 2:45:34 PM | I've done...
...NOTHING!
I suck at programming :)
Anyhow, now that THAT's out of the way. I'm starting to think about my new computer. My P3-800, GeForce 3, and 1gig of ram isn't cutting it anymore. So, I'm thinking of going with something 64 bit and an SLi video solution (Dual 6600 GTs). It's gonna be expensive. Then afterwards, I'm going to upgrade my old computer (which will become my wife's computer). I would feel bad having an uber system and her having a crappy one, so I'll figure out something to put in place of the current mobo/processor. I'd like to stickwith something that stilll takes SD-RAM, that way I dont have to shell out for new ram also. Hell, I might as well just buy her a new computer too :/
And in other news, GWAR kicks ass.

 ## :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: |
Posted - 6/23/2005 12:33:49 PM | Why does no one ever comment on things unless it's something stupid? Rarely do I see comments, in anyones journal, regarding the dev side of the journal entries. Most of the replies go to the retarded entries...

 ## Holy crap, more Lazteroids 2! |
Posted - 6/22/2005 2:50:01 PM | Not like anyone cares, really ... but I did more work on the controls for Lazteroids 2 last night. I got it rotating along with the mouse, so it points wherever the mouse is. Though talking with a friend, he mentioned a better way of doing it, so going to try to implement that tonight.
I got it going in the right direction too, with a velocity and such, but it's giving me some problems which I hope to iron out today or tomorrow. As for now, I guess i'll throw up a link to what I have done so far.
Here
It might move a little too fast according to your system. I have time based movement in there, but i'm doing some calculations wrong and only found out last night right before bed, so I'll fix it, but that is what i'm working on right now. Keep in mind, the ship is an asteroid for now, and in the end, it will not follow your cursor like a lost dog. That is the "some problems" I ran in to, which should be relatively easy to fix. I just ran out of go-juice last night while programming.
I'm sorry my "demo" couldn't be anything more fun.

 ## Lazteroids 2 -- A new goal |
Posted - 6/21/2005 1:40:45 PM | So since I [kind of] managed to meet my goal last time of getting the ship to go in the right direction, i'm setting another goal for Thursday (June 23, 2005). I say kind of, because my goal was to get my movement system working, but after getting it working on sunday i realized that wasn't what i wanted and went back to the drawing board.
I want to be able to rotate according to where the mouse cursor is, and get the control scheme working properly (again). If I'm feeling ballsy, I might try to tackle the camera, but I doubt it. There's still more work that needs to be done before I do that, I think...
I know my goals aren't much, but they're something. It's getting work on my game done. Taking small steps gets it done faster than not doing anything at all.

 ## Lazteroids 2 -- deadline update |
Posted - 6/20/2005 3:58:28 PM | So last week I set a deadline for myself to get something done on Lazteroids 2. I was to get the ship going in the direct direction, heh. So here's the scoop...
I got the ship going in the right direction, was much easier than I thought it would be (thanks Brad, for the help).
Deadline achieved! However... When I first thought of the game, I wanted a crimsonland control scheme. In that game, you move in all four directions (up/down, and strafing left/right), and use the mouse to aim. You are ROTATED in that direction, but not MOVED in that direction. That's just the direction you fire. so, why did I bother trying to get my ship to go in the direction it's pointing? I don't know. Stupid move on my part, wasn't thinking. It was pretty much a waste of time getting it to do that, since it wasn't even the style of control I wanted.
But then I got to thinking ... I can't use crimsonland-style controls in my game. Space ships can't move freely in all four directions ... they dont have reverse thrusters, or side thrusters ... at least, not my ships. I can't move the shi left when I press left, or move it back when I press down. So I had to scratch the crimsonland control idea. So, I'm back to making the ship move in the direction it's pointing, heh.
So confusing.

 ## Work |
Posted - 6/17/2005 4:39:22 PM | So, I made a huge mistaek at work and it made things go boom while no one was here. That sucked, so today i'm feeling rather blahish. In order to help take my mind off of things (keep my mind on something other than how badly I fucked up), I took Pouya's tetris code and made it a little more ... "readable." What the fuck is up with line 80?

 ## Seether - The Truth |
Posted - 6/17/2005 2:36:20 PM | If I gave you the truth would it keep you alive
Though I'm closer to wrong I'm no further from right
And now I'm convinced on the inside that something's wrong with me
Convinced on the inside, you're so much more than me, yeah
No there's nothing you say that can salvage the lie
But I'm trying to keep my intentions disguised
And now I'm deprived of my conscience and something's got to give
Deprived of my conscience this all belongs to me, yeah
I'm beaten down again, I belong to them
Beaten down again, I've failed you
I'm weaker now my friend, I belong to them
Beaten down again, I've failed you
The deception you show is your own parasite
Just a word of advice you can heed if you like
And now I'm convinced on the inside that something's wrong with me
Convinced on the inside you're so much more than me, yeah
I'm beaten down again, I belong to them
Beaten down again, I've failed you
I'm weaker now my friend, I belong to them
Beaten down again, I've failed you
I'm beaten down again, I belong to them
Beaten down again, I've failed you
I'm weaker now my friend, I belong to them
Beaten down again, I've failed you
I'm beaten down
I'm beaten down
I'm beaten down
I'm beaten down"

 ## Lazteroids 2, movement |
Posted - 6/16/2005 2:12:27 PM | So me and a good friend of mine are each setting some short term goals on our projects. Hopefully to try to get us working a bit more actively on our projects, and these goals will have a sunday deadline.
My goal: I'd like to get my movement system working properly. I'd like for the ship to be able to go in the direction it's facing and for the velocity to work as it should (not just stopping when you let off the controls, but slowing to a stop). Sounds doable, provided World of Warcraft doesn't get in the way.
His goal: He's going to finish up his basic scene nodes, geometry and transform, and display. Hopefully get his camera class working too.
Hopefully these can get done. I feel that once I get past my current hurdle with the movement, I will work more on it. I've got a problem with trying to solve a problem. When I get to a hurdle, I freeze, and never work on it again. That sucks, I need to work on that.
And for those of you who play World of Warcraft, I am Lazareth on the Alleria server. Level 36 Night Elf Rogue.

 ## Four E Four! |
Posted - 6/15/2005 2:13:33 PM | So here's the deal. I was thinking, "4E4 sounds cool. I like all those elements, those would make a fun game."
My idea: a racing game featuring all four of those elements. Here's what I was going to do. Back in Full Sail, I made a cool little tile editor, which essentially made a race track. Screenshot:

Pretty cool, especially because it had a random track feature. It would create a complete random track, no matter how big the track size, the track would be totally complete. Now, it did have it's flaws. There were always little side-tracks that got made. That's easily fixable though. I was going to incorporate this into a random height mapping thing (very subtle one, to create small hills) to help give the terrain some sort of texture rather than just being all flat. I think it'd be pretty cool.
However, I lost all my source code from Full Sail (FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK [note: Kids please don't read the previous expletive]). That pissed me off, I had a lot of good code I could look at and re-use. But anyway, so I'd have to rewrite the editor from scratch. That's doable.
I can't even finish Lazteroids 2 and i've been on that since before christmas, what the fuck makes me think I can do 4E4? HAH! (kids, don't read the previous sentence).
The point to all this? Someone, steal my idea. I won't make it, it'd be kinda cool, but I need to focus on Lazteroids 2. And if anyone has all of my old Full Sail source code, let me know. Plskthx.

 ## Lazteroids 2 |
Posted - 6/14/2005 4:26:39 PM | So I haven't done any work on Lazteroids 2 since my last entry about it here. World of Warcraft seems to have become priority over writing my own games.
I envy all of you who can actually write a game, complete or not, but at least something playable that shows you can do it. I tried entering 1W1B, but I didn't have much time, and my idea was lame anyway. Even if I didn't have to go out of town for most of the week, I woulda spent my time playing WoW instead of programming.
A good friend of mine once said, "Some people play games, others make them." I often times think about that phrase and ask myself which type of person I am. Starting to seem to me like I'm for former rather than the latter. Damnit...
/sigh
