Disappointment and 'A New Hope' (tm) |
Posted - 6/28/2005 12:43:40 PM | I lied. Time constraints and unexpected interruptions ruined my planned development time and as a result only a threadbare sidescroller engine was begun. This saddens me, but somehow I think I'll get over the urge to suffocate myself with an Amulet of Strangulation +1. Somehow. Here's an image of how far the game was along:

Yes, I cried too. All of the graphics are obviously placeholders, and no enemies or weapons got coded in. I think I'll learn from this procrastination mistake and get started early on my 4E4 entry. :D
In other news, I'm currently developing a fun little overhead 1-2 player crazy-shoot-em-up game, similar in gameplay to Doom or Serious Sam. Basically big levels, legions of enemies, and lots of traps and tricks. Yum. Here's a screenshot of the basic little tile engine that it entails so far. Plans are in the work for non-uniform tiles, not to mention transitions:

Everything is overly ugly right now, but as I post more screenshots, I promise it'll get prettier. :)

 24-Hour Make-a-Game! |
Posted - 6/26/2005 10:53:06 PM | Alright, so here's the deal: a gamedev forum that I admin on, onGameDev, is running a game contest that began in March-ish and ends on Tuesday. I've been a procrastinating bum and haven't done anything at all yet. Here's the plan: write a complete shooter game (shooter being the genre of the contest) in one day. Ideally one ranking not too high on the Crumminess Scale.
Tomorrow is (virtually) free for me, so I'll be sitting here doing some hardcore coding. What could be more fun? I'll be posting periodic updates as I progress on my Development Log over at onGameDev, so if you're even vaguely interested you can take a looksee at how I'm doing. :)
That is all. Expect a nice little showcase entry after the contest, irregardless of the attractiveness/completeness of it!

The Right Tool for the Right Job.. |
Posted - 6/24/2005 2:57:26 PM | The other day I was sitting down getting generally frusterated over the stereotypes floating around about game development. The silliness of me doing this aside, I was mainly focusing on the misconception that people use high-level tools like game-creators or high-level programming langauges (DarkBasic, BlitzBasic, etc) are retarded.
There's lots of people hanging out on their Pedestal of Programming Knowledge (+2) that scorn those who don't use C++ for every line of code they write. If any. This just isn't the case -- all tools have their purpose in the world of game development. The real game developers are the ones that know which tool to use at the right time. :)
And so I present,
The Right Tool for the Right Job

 Promises and expectations.. |
Posted - 6/23/2005 11:20:10 PM | Writing and maintaining a blog is no small task. Nay, nay. It requires a passion for mediocrity and a desire for lack-luster writing. And most of all, it needs to be interesting. Ideally I will fulfill only the last requisite.
This journal should be one day filled with my day-to-day (or week-to-week, or, sadly, hour-to-hour) developments in whatever game I am writing at the time. My current portfolio is somewhat scant, and I'll be improving upon it as time progresses.
If any of this blather interests you, than I commend thee and hope to hear from you via the comments system. :)
It's going to be a bumpy ride!
