Of digital painting...
Right, these are for Aragon Online.
More obsessive perfectionism -- this time showing the progression of the images!

Yes, back to this one; I decided it needed to be clear that this guy was important rather than some dude tramping about in the woods with a bow.
1: old version, (some missing steps go here, the rest is almost polish because I didn't really save all that much)
2: revised version, more flare, visible face
3: sized up hand and body (made head relatively smaller); it's easy to totally botch proportions when you don't spend a lot of time on a sketch beforehand (I did use reference though!)
4: added the posse back in, slightly altered.
5: gave him a crown to make him royalty of some sort, made the trees all pretty (after going for a walk in the park, looking up a lot, and reading O-san's observations on how painting blurry things with a sharper brush looks more dramatic. Turns out, it does. [Pst, O-san -- write more painting tips.] )

1: old version (based on a picture of me, actually; though I assure you I don't look all that much like a goblin; really! When I can't find a pose by random googling, sometimes it's easy to just snap myself with a webcam and work from that. It's a great way to go about drawing hands.)
2: sized down to allow for more epicness in the picture
3: gave him some bling to look higher-status; again, showing a leader of goblins rather than a grunt.
4: the change here is a bit hard to notice at first, but it's important -- look at where the shoulder armor hits the chin. I dropped the shoulders down a bit because the pose looked cramped and weird.
5: final polish and background! I tried to give the outfit/shield a bit more variation of texture, brought in some hot orange underlighting, gave the fur trim and face highlights, made the scar a bit more badass, showed some teeth for a nice sneer. And yeah, totally going for some Kurosawa with the banners in the background. Note a very loose regard for horizons; this is expressionistic; proper perspective must be sacrificed for drama.

A new one this time. Lots of fun.
1: first sketch -- orcish knight leading the cavalry. (I wasn't quite clear if they're supposed to be riding horses or worgs, so I left it unclear.); I also neglected to save the first version of the sky, so you see the final sky in the background prematurely.
2: Started around the face, the focal point of the picture, and sort of started rendering in an outward spiral. Note orange underlighting versus cold blue light from the top; I love that, makes for very easy contrast.
3: More rendering out and around.
4: More rendering outward, the cape, arm, reins, some hair from the mount; added the background banners ("A red banner with a black fist").
5: Cleaned up more rendering, cheesed the levels, gave the face much more contrast so the eye is drawn there, and rendered the clouds more carefully. I really love the colors going on with the sky.

...and pixeling.

And I also made seasonal crops tiles!

Don't you just love the contrast of scale between tiny pixel art and digital painting, of the mundane and epic? Yeah, the context is probably unkind to the crops, but they're really more central to the gameplay.

Sometimes I don't feel much like writing.
(Good thing I can draw instead.)

Here're some assets for Aragon Online:

I'm being a huge perfectionist and updating old portraits I painted, like so:

Besides drawing a better picture, ideally, the goal of this was to make the character's face more prominent in the image, what with the guy supposed to be a notable leader and all. And I wanted to have more varied textures and color in the costuming. (I do kinda like the dudes in the background. Maybe I'll add those back in; it implies that he's possibly an army leader rather than just skulking about in the woods.)

Next, the trees have seasons!

Spring and summer are cheesy color shifting, but fall and winter got a bit more involved. I may still have to add more snow to some of those, depending on how it looks all together.
Maybe spring wants some happy little flowers on those trees.

And finally, to pad things out even though I didn't want to show this in-progress, here's part of an over-the-top banner scene painting:

I always like drawing the Bad Guys. Surely they're just misunderstood.

[Regarding all the AO stuff -- it's the only project I'm working on that I'm free to post material from. I've been doing a lot of other neat stuff, I assure you, but it all has to wait for quite some time before going public.]

Meta
Yeah, didn't post for two months -- I moved to Vancouver last month. It's neat here, I like big cities.

(And if I ever have to get a real job in the games industry, I'm in the right place for it. Not that I especially want to work at EA Sports, but you know. ...They've got some swanky offices downtown, though from what I hear the actual grunts are out in the boonies.)

Been really busy with all kinds of things, most of which I can't post on here yet.

Dredmor
After a push, Dredmor seems to have stalled with my move and others' starting school again, though it seems to be just starting to trundle again. Here's a shot of two reports in the Mantis bug-tracker (which is very nice, I should add):

Top: When a certain scroll was read, the protagonist character would play the head exploding animation then the game would crash. I tell you, that is a scroll that should /not/ be read.
Bottom: I was promised a new office chair and didn't get it, so I reported it as a bug and assigned it to the responsible party (who is otherwise resistant to my goading). I received my chair and it is now serving me well. Huzzah!

Murder Motel
I finally finished the map tiles for Murder Motel; have a look at a little selection of them:

Two thoughts: The cars really remind me of GTA2. And I always draw things way too dark (what you see here are the uber-brightened versions of the tiles).

Started a blog
I finally jumped on the bandwagon and started a "real" blog -- I imagine the direction will be a bit more general and contain more inane commentary on this game media of ours rather than just development, as well as tangents into other art-type things, rather than so much just showing off work. Or maybe I'll just post the same stuff on each, eventually. We'll see. I almost said that I'd feel more compelled to write as if I was writing self-contained articles or essays, but I feel compelled to do that here already, to some extent.
I'll probably just post whatever I want, which I suppose is how it's supposed to be.

[I gotta tell you, it would be a beautiful thing if Gamedev.net had the features Wordpress does.]
