Posted - 9/27/2009 12:59:22 PM | Good read. I would think part of this moving away from freely adjustable difficulty settings comes from the entry of achievements/trophies. Since these are little more than generalized bragging rights they put the requirement that my playing session of a game is qualitatively comparable to yours. Cheat codes and the ability to change difficulty mid-game would make it very difficult to design achievements so I guess publishers wanted these things gone.

That's a good point; I hadn't thought about the achievements angle to the "difficulty slider" feature.
