Posted - 10/19/2009 9:52:06 PM | After a few days of effort, my game framework is now running on the iPhone. However, it still lacks sound and touch input.
Currently supported platforms:
- Windows
- Mac (somewhat)
- Linux
- iPhone - OpenGL ES1 only
What isn't going to happen any time soon is the OpenGL ES2 rendering backend, due to the size of the overhaul that would entail for the tank game.
There were a lot of interesting challenges I had to face. First of all, when porting to OpenGL ES:
- There's no immediate mode support. That means no glBegin, glEnd, and glVertex. While I did write an immidiate mode emulation layer to handle some special cases where vertex arrays wouldn't have been suitable, I spent most of my time creating vertex arrays to replace the rest of the the immediate mode code.
- No GL_QUADS. By creating functions to draw quads for you, this wasn't that difficult to fix. Using the emulation layer I can still draw quads the old way if I like
- No shaders. My game won't look as nice, but it shouldn't be a problem, I hope.
- Various other small difference like what texture formats are supported. There's no gluPerspective and glOrtho is now known as glOrthof
