'Scripting' using real languages I've noticed a few tools which talk about using scripting for game logic, but the scripting is done through a 'real' language. For example Unity3D supports scripting through C#. How is this 'scripting' different from just writing your app on...

Social networking with strangers? It might sound a bit weird, but I was thinking about a social networking site specifically focused on introducing people to total strangers. I suppose you might think of it as a non-dating dating site; people are introduced to others who the sys...

PS3 Slim Was there already a thread on this? I was just wondering if it's different other than on the size front? Is the introduction of the Slim a way to get a regular PS3 at a much cheaper price? And since the PS3 has not been around that long, is...

Recommend a budget steering wheel? For PC games primarily (I know some advertise cross-compatibility with consoles which would be a bonus). I've never played driving games with a wheel before, normally keyboard, so I'm really looking for something cheap but not too flimsy... is there...

Can't find a reference for web.xml I've been googling the last 30min and looking on home pages for TomCat and Sun... I can't find an online guide explaining the web.xml file. I can find the Servlet API JavaDocs easily and a bunch of tutorials, but no proper reference. Usi...

Want to get J2EE stuff in Eclipse, without trashing it I have no idea which Eclipse download I got a couple of years ago, but my Eclipse 3.3 installation has no support for web-projects. I see I can download a full J2EE version of Eclipse, but I don't know what will happen to my current setup. Alternativ...

A network middleware equivalent of Unity3D? I was wondering, is there a networking middleware solution which would allow games written in C++, Java, C#, Flash, JS, etc to communicate on a common server platform?

[C++] Creating a multi-type class I'm writing a simple scripting type system, and one central part is how values are represented. In this system, the only types used are bool, int, float, string... the issue is because I don't require the scripter to specify value types i t...

[C++] Equality operator best as non-member function I was checking the syntax for operator overloading, and the site I was reading made the claim that "when the operator does not modify it’s operands, it’s best to implement the overloaded operator as a friend function of the class". e.g a non-membe...

Saving/Loading Replays I've been thinking over creating such a system and I'm not sure I have the best solution. I'm essentially torn between a centralised & modular system. The first has a "replay saver", which knows what types of data are saved and exposes an API for...

XInput, Gamepads & Modern Console Ports - The Horror Sorry to all those defending it, but requiring XBox360 controllers on a PC is sheer idiocy. Maybe it's not the easiest thing to do a full DI & key-remap functionality. But it's not like they didn't already have these from the last decade. And it...

CoD: MW2 - Ratio of Success Firstly, 5 hours for who? A good game-player who knows the sequel could be 10X faster than an average player. Secondly, is it that expensive? £50 for 5 hours is £10/hr. How much does a cinema ticket cost - £5-10, for 1.5-2 hours of film? Thirdl...

Unity 3D is now free! Yeah it's free for hobby development. A few features are missing but I'd imagine it's still up there with the best free tools on offer, considering all the stuff it includes.

Unity 3D is now free! Well I'm not a shader developer, but is it really just a case of plugging in new shaders? You don't need to expose anything extra from the code?

Unity 3D is now free! Quote:Original post by Fiddler Quote:Original post by Dreddnafious Maelstrom According to the license it doesn't include dynamic shadows, non-fixed function shaders, or post processing effects, isn't that going to pose an issue for most projects? ...

UFEC Official Information Post Are you publicising this on other sites, issuing press releases, etc? I suggest you aim big. Approach well-known companies about prizes. And see if you can get any big-shots involved in the judging.

Licenses with restrictions on licensee's financial status Quote:Original post by swiftcoderAs for Unity, I imagine that once you have an annual turnover in excess of $100,000, a few grand for Unity Pro licenses will seem like a drop in the bucket [smile]Not really. Turnover != profit.
