I'm sort of new at this whole game programming thing, so I don't know if this would work, but couldn't you add another line of pixels on one side of the sprite where the ASCII of the sprite's name is converted into the pixel's RGB? It'd sure be a pain in the ass to draw, but you could make a program to handle it for you. I think it would work as long as you use enough bits for color and the sprite's name has fewer characters than 3 times its height.
