Biology and Gaming: Why Women Don't Play Games
Post Reply
Interesting article, I hope I didn't like it and agree at most with it just because I'm a man...
The opinion of a non gamer woman would be welcome !

There's just something that bothered me. There are repeated apparitions of ideas like 'nature wants' which is a scientifical nonsense at least since Darwin.
Because nature doesn't want anything, or doesn't want us to do anything. The only reallity is that the species that have the most develop skills survive, while the others disappear. But no animal does anything 'because it has to'.
Saying that 'Nature never does anything for no reason' is really wrong. Nature does EVERYTHING for no reason, and only the things that make a species survive stay.

Sorry for bringing such an old article back to life, but I still find it very up to date.

So basically this article ends with the thesis "team-based tasks for men, team-affecting factors for women", which I support entirely from my (male) standpoint. What I feel somewhat lacking, though, is a more concrete suggestion based upon that conclusion on how to implement games for women. There's an example (The Sims), but the weaknesses are just described as "not enough detail, no speech". Also I don't understand why RPGs aren't mentioned, as they tend to have very deep and dynamic storylines.

Does anyone have more articles that are about women-friendly game design (not "Barbie's Rainbow Farm" stuff)
