Interesting article. But I believe I have already seen pro leagues for games such as Counter Strike and Quake... However, those leagues wander around the country and they compete in stadiums and such - spectators, hot dogs and beer included! That would be SO SWEET! Imagine fragging someone on a JumboTRON... Oh well, Landsknecht

I think you would have some serious legal difficulties trying to start this kind of scheme. A lot of states and/or countries would consider this to be online gambling, which is still illegal in many places. As gambling, the return is pathetic. 50% payout? Most casinos in Vegas are 95%+. I strongly suspect the social interaction in the game would suck. Why? Because the money angle would bring out the worst in people. If you think UO or Evercrack are bad, how about a place where there is real money to be made? Thanks, but I'd rather play with friends than in a shark tank like that. Finally, is this an article or a sales pitch? If the guy is looking for a job or investor, he could put that in an author's note, not make it a central theme. This sounds like his proposal that he's been sending around looking for work.

In a perfect world, this idea would rock. Now, factor in the world we live in and it leaves much to be desired. I've quit playing online games because there are too many cheats out for every game. You never really know if you've lost battle because your opponent is more skilled or better equipped with hacks. Now, add money into the equation. UGH! As AP said, there'd probably be a lot of bad attitude as well. How can an online interactive money based game work when a chat room (or forum, hehehe) can't even be civil? Perhaps, if the game was a Java-based applet there'd be less security issues. Hmmm... "Breathe deep... hold... and release." -The Way to a Better Sphincter Get Tranced!

Try playing Sacrifice, there are no cheats for that (though I can't be 100% sure, I am pretty certain).

| I am the guy who wrote the article. someone who did not leave their name wrote: < would consider this to be online gambling, which is still illegal in many places.>> Yes, this is the gray area. but the Golden Tee coin op tournament does operate in all states. This would only be a home version of that. << As gambling, the return is pathetic. 50% payout? Most casinos in Vegas are 95%+.>> This concept could payout what ever percentage that we would want. We could pay 99.9%, but there would be no profit for the games creators. I suggest 50% because there would be good profits for all. The players of existing coin op tournaments have accepted this amount. << I strongly suspect the social interaction in the game would suck. Why? Because the money angle would bring out the worst in people. If you think UO or Evercrack are bad, how about a place where there is real money to be made? Thanks, but I'd rather play with friends than in a shark tank like that.>> You are assuming that this is an interactive game. Although most people prefer interacting with other people, there are some introverts that prefer keeping to themselves. But in a "Match Play" mode, there may be a competitive "Shark like" atmosphere that you refer to. Just like when people play in a bolwing league << Finally, is this an article or a sales pitch? If the guy is looking for a job or investor, he could put that in an author's note, not make it a central theme. This sounds like his proposal that he's been sending around looking for work.>> Yes, I have been out of work for over a year. I did mention in the article that I am looking for work. And that is why I wrote it. Is that bad? Concerning the mention of cheating, this is my greatest concern. Each tournament game would need to be played from the server so that "Phoney" scores can not be sent in. This area would need alot of thought or study. I am sure that all of the "Gambling" web sites have solved this problem. | I, personnaly, don't see how the issue of gambling comes up... It is more gambling than pro or semi-pro sports. Or even, for that matter, any type of tournament where there is a buy in and a prize. Like the author pointed out, the element of chance and luck needs to be reduced to managable levels. I don't see how Quake could be considered gambling any more than playing basketball. An online poker game, however, is obviously gambling due to the level of random luck. Landsknecht |

You people obviously are unaware of the growth of online and professional gaming over the last couple of years. Quake 3, Counterstrike, RTCW, Warcraft III...not to mention upcoming games such as Doom 3 and Quake 4, all of these games are designed for serious competition. Just go the http://www.thecpl.com and take a look at the amount of money sponsers such as nvidia and amd are pumping into these tournaments. Add to that the negotiations of media coverage of events on television, and you start to see that gaming tournaments are no small matter. They will only become more popular as time goes on; hell, I plan to become a pro gamer myself, considering my Q3 clan can hold our own against the best teams in North America. As for the gambling issue...that's just absurd. Since when does prize money have anything to do with gambling? Finally, in the above games mentioned, cheating is not even an issue, as match refs are fully aware of what each player is doing and have full control over server settings. Besides, no one but newbies actually cheat anyway; all the serious gamers would never dream of cheating, as it would tarnish they're name forever. I'm speaking from first hand experience here, and I hope I was able to clear up some misconceptions about the topic at hand. edit: One more thing i'd like to add is that while the money is always a good thing, pro gamers couldn't care less about it; all that matters is actually performing well. Why do you think so many big names play in LAN tournaments with little or no prizes at all? edit: grammar [edited by - Enigma1625 on April 8, 2002 2:58:47 PM] [edited by - Enigma1625 on April 12, 2002 12:49:28 PM]
