| I thought that the course looked cool, until I realized that the professor wrote "Computer game programming with directx 8.0", THE single worst book EVER written on ANY subject. | Hey, don't flame me. The DirectX book was advertised wrongly by the publisher. They asked for a cut-down version of my DirectX 7 book that would sell for less, and then advertised it as something different. Not my fault. My books are aimed at a niche market - the people who are smart enough to read the DirectX documentation, but need a little hand getting started on that first game demo. I make that clear in the Preface and on my book web pages (the one that I maintain, not the publisher - publishers are inherently evil.) I've never claimed to write an "Everything You Wanted to Know about DirectX But Were Too Dumb to Figure Out from the Documentation" book. As for the DirectX 3 interface, it is still great for beginners. I don't teach it in my 2D game programming class any more, in the Fall I will of course teach using texture mapping to fake DirectDraw, which you guys apparently think is cool but I think is unnecessary work for little return. My 3D game programming course is probably what you guys want to see - take a look at http://hercule.csci.unt.edu/~ian/classes/spring02/csci4330/ before you start judging me. To the guy who was upset about my DirectX 8 book: did you buy it? If so, I made 75c from the sale. Send me your address and I'll mail you your 3 quarters. | Actually, Professor Parberry is right. I'm not entirely sure what your problem with the book is, but it was EXACTLY what I had been looking for on the order of four years. Once I had the foundations down, I had an operating game up in three months, without directly copying any of his code, without practically any previous knowledge of C++ or programming. Perhaps your complaints are valid, but it did what it was supposed to, and for that, I thank him for an excellent book. -Anonymous Teen, Age 17 |
