Thanks!!! I've been looking for an article like this for quite a while. This first one was great. Keep it up! I think many people with the linux kit could benifit from this series. AIM screen name: twinsr71

Thanks for the positive feedback. I spent a long time putting together the article. I was trying to learn to program the ps2 but couldn't find a decent tutorial anywhere. I gathered as much info from as many places as i could find and eventualy got a fairly good idea of what i was doing. After figuring everything out i wanted to make a real beginers guide that explains EVERYTHING in detail. I've already got a good start on the second one, and there should be more on the way. Thanks, Rob Louie

I don't mean to sound ungrateful.... but: 1) Your tutorial is about programming using libps2dev. Unfortunately, most kit users who have gotten anywhere with the kit have done so in spite of libps2dev, not because of it. I fear not many people ever get anywhere with it. 2) Another reason for the lack of support for libps2dev is the presence of SPS2. SPS2 is a kernel module which opens up access to the PS2 in a way that the stock kernel doesn't. See http://playstation2-linux.com/projects/sps2 for details SPS2 was written after libpsdev, and comes with some great support. Not only is the author available on IRC and the forums constantly, there are a great deal of very nice sample programs included with it to really show off what it can do. A tutorial series has just started - the first 2 lessons are up, but I think they're source code only ATM as the author is away at SIGGRAPH. I think you'll be much better off writing some SPS2 tutorials based on the excellent sample code contained in it - the interface is a million times more intuitive than libps2dev - i.e. you can actually see what each line of code is meant to do! I know a lot of work goes into these tutorials - I have my own tutorial series all about programming the PS2 vector units at http://www.pcs.uklinux.net/id19.htm and at http://playstation2-linux.com/projects/vutut. I'm not saying that you should definately quit writing this series - it seems people are already listening. It just seems like you'd be far better off not continuing and working off the back of SPS2. Well done for getting to grips with libps2dev! Now apply your skills to SPS2 and you'll go far.

I have to agree with eratos that SPS2 is far superior to libps2dev. Performance wise, libps2dev can never hope to compete. Plus SPS2 is a lot closer to coding for the official T10K development kit than libps2dev. That said, I think you have written a great tutorial and whether you chose to stick with libps2dev or move to SPS2 I definitely hope we see more of them

I just wanted to reiterate Kazan's statement that I *do* want to see more tutorials from you - the one you have written is great. It's the subject matter I disagree with, not the quality of the tutorial itself, which it was never my intention to question.

| @all: generally i'm totally new to console programming; i have never spend any time to look at developing software on console-systems, but this article catched my eye; and i must say it looks very easy and clear; and much more simplier than doing Direct3D initialization *g*g* if i would have the money, i would go and buy a PS2 to do some dev. on it. i hope we can read more of this. | Good article! berkoff, I don't think this tutorial will help you with DX or OpenGL very much. PS2 has it's own SDK, and does not use DX or OpenGL. But I think XBox does (DX = Microsoft. XBox = Microsoft). I think that's why I haven't been able to find an XBox console dev article.
