 Real-Time Cartoon Rendering with Direct-X 8.0 Hardware
Post Reply
Good article. Was a bit sceptical at first - "Another cartoon renderer?!??! Surely we've seen enough of these things to last a lifetime......". This was sufficently different and interesting enough to be worth it.

Only one (very minor) point - PS1.4 is supported in DX8.1, yet you say we cant use it. So maybe the article should be

"Real-Time Cartoon Rendering with Direct-X 8.0 Hardware"

Tried sw-shader? (sw-shader.sourceforge.net or something similar).
It provides fast emulation for vs2/ps2

I suggest that you go through some introductory DirectX tutorials first. Try www.drunkenhyena.com, for example (you can also do a search for "andy pike DirectX tutorials")

Anyway, to answer the question: The shader assembly is compiled using shader assemblers (which come with the SDK. vsa.exe for vshaders, and psa.exe for pshaders), or through some D3DX functions.

[After reading the article]
Nice trick to do the image-space edge-detection. I've seen it done in ps2 in one shader (possible with the number of instructions available and the ability to sample more than once), but I've never thought of doing it in ps1.1.
Neat

Thanks for pointing this out Neil. I forgot that PS1.1 was available in direct-x 8.0, I'll send a message to gamedev and see if they can change it.
