| Nice article, Rick. I really liked your use of visual examples, as that is a massive benefit to the reader of the article. Good work! |

| My only thought is that the title is too generic, it just seems to me like there should be a "Photoshop" or "Minimalist" in there, as this seems to be a fairly narrow tutorial around, um, using Photoshop to create minimalistic pixel art. -Mark the Artist |

| I agree it definitely needs a "with Photoshop" in the title. Maybe "Beginning Pixel Art in Photoshop, Part 1" |

| Yea, I realized as I was posting it that Rich and I never really settled on a title, and that it was a 2-part tutorial series on pixel art. Hence... well, you know. Since people find the title lacking (and I admit it's mainly from my prior knowledge of the article content that I didn't think to make it more elaborate) I'll ping Rich for a better name. Glad people are enjoying it though. I've been poking Rich since IGC back at the end of Oct to get this written as our Visual Arts section has been growing very stagnant - and not just in terms of age either but variety of content. Put the word out to fellow artists people! I want more uncommon stuff! ![]() ________________ Drew Sikora President, Programmer - Blade Edge Software Executive Producer, Newsletter Editor - GameDev.net Community Relations, Live Events Mngr - Game Institute IGDA Chapter Advisor - New Jersey |

| I'm not that good with pixel art, but if you need more vector art tutorials I made a more in-depth Inkscape tutorial for over at the webcomic forum for Order of the Stick (they're pretty big on vector art over there for making avatars). It's not directly game related and is rather "Order of the Stick" oriented, but it might be useful here and I don't mind additional links. I could put making another game related tutorial on my to do list, but unfortunately it's pretty full (and I'm being coaxed into more Order of the Stick related tutorials). David Shaw, a.k.a. | To be honest, this article is lacking. It's clearly not written by a professional writer nor professional pixel artist. Please, if you want to see some quality pieces or you want to learn/discuss/teach the details of real pixel art... Go to Pixelation. My post might sound harsh, and I could've chosen different words to express myself, but due to lack of sleep/time/spirit I care just a little bit about that. Click the damn link and see for yourself. Quality. Pixel. Art. Not like those shown in the article. Google: Kenneth Fejer, Adam Tierney, Ptoing, Peppermint Pig, Helm. |

Quote: Harsh, but a bit misunderstood. I've updated the title to make it better reflect the focus of this article, which is minimal pixel art. This is a great way for people to start working with pixels before trying to create the elaborate artwork you linked to, which is a whole other level entirely. As for the professional pixel artist shot, that's inexcusable of you since you clearly didn't take the short time needed to Google Rich's name and learn that he's an accomplished artist and furthermore his visual style has helped Pixeljam get into the IGF finals and continue to succeed. |

| I've had a simple game brewing and this has given me some ideas on what kind of visual approach I was going to take. I was dreading trying to create the artwork. An elementary, Atari-like look actually sounds like a great idea and I think I'll be going that route. Pixeljam.com is a must-look, too. |

Quote: While the pixel art on pixelation is detailed, this is not what Rich was trying to achieve. His article clearly deals with the minimalist approach to pixels, and I think the article is very well written. But who can blame your lack of comprehension - you're sleep deprived just like me :D @Prinz Eugn - please do post a tutorial on your art process, I've been intrigued by the Angels art for the longest time :D |

Quote: Hi, this is Rich, the writer of the article. It's true, I'm not a professional writer whatsoever. It's my first time writing for anyone actually. Making art & games is my interest not writing, but I was asked if I would do this so I figured I would give it a shot. It came out better than I thought it would actually, as a 3 part series. As for your comments on my artistic abilities, it's cool. everyone's entitled to their opinions. Rich |
