I liked the article much. It's right, we need to make small games before working on the games like Doom III.

I think it's better that there aren't any links. Writing Tetris based on a tutorial would take almost all of the most useful learning out of the process.

Yeap . Dave is right though about it taking out the most useful learning out of the process...so be warned.

Ok, well I kinda expected that stuff, and none of it uber helped, it was a good article though. However, I dunno if I simply faile to look deep enough, or if it's not here, but I know not of what software or program I will need to even begin making these things, and once I have that program, how am I supposed to know what to do in order to make Tetris? e-mail me at dnd_DemonChild7@comcast.net or you can IM me on AIM, my sn is Vampyr Tooth, and my YIM sn is VampyrTooth, so someone please tell me. Keep in mind I don't think I'll be able to find this page again, so a direct respose is appreciated.

Well, after reading this excellent article, I've decided to make my own Tetris clone, and write articles as tutorials on how to make it. Not all articles have been written yet, but I'm updating them regularly.
The articles can be read here: http://geekswithblogs.com/felipe/articles/38576.aspx
My Tetris clone can be downloaded here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/anotherblock/
Updates about stuff I'm doing on it, and other stuff, can be read at my blog: http://geekswithblogs.com/felipe/

I hope I've helped.

If you want to start a new little funny 2d game in .NET,
you can try to use the AllegNet Library.

It's .net full managed library based on c++ allegro library 4.2.0

Examples for c# and VB.net are avaibles.

Tutorials will come as soon as possible, and projects section for your projects too.

Go and see it at http://www.skorzec.com/allegnet

Yes, but some direction would be nice. Like where to start, or are we just suposed to buy a book and get busy?

If you need to ask something like that - the answer is: don't start at all, you'll never make it anyway.

Btw, GREAT article, I link to it regularly!

FYI: Geoff's "Lupine Games" website has been down for a while now (there's a competition of some sort sitting there) and the email address at the end of the article bounces.

This is a bit of a bummer as that was the only address I had for him. I did some work for him in the past and wouldn't mind catching up with Geoff again. (If anyone knows of his current whereabouts, I'd appreciate it.)

It's a very inspiring article. It made me write a tetris clone!

Now I've created a site dedicated to this article. It's a wiki where developers can publish their games and get feedback from other people.

Head over to http://www.t-3s.net/ and see for your self. :-)

In my opinion, Tetris isn't a very good game to start with; I've been programming for over a year and am still having difficulties completing a decent clone. A much better project to start with would be Pong; you don't even need a CPU paddle or destructable blocks, just a controllable paddle and a ball.

Maybe. Nevertheless, http://www.t-3s.net/ is kind of a tribute to that article, so it's going to follow that path. :-)

Great stuff! I am a film producer looking to develop a video game. We are looking for a video game developer to help create the first video game about Olympic Wrestling and high school wrestling. We are interested in incorporating the game in various feature films in development.

Most of my film productions are about Olympic wrestling as I am the person that production companies come to coordinate stunts or develop commercials and feature films regarding Olympic wrestling. Some of my clients include Nike, Adidas, Walt Disney, SBC Global, Motrin and more.

There are have a few big budget movies about wrestling in development and I want to place a video game into some of these movies as product placement and utilize the marketing of each film to cross market the video game.

There are many organizations that I am associated and endorsed by. All of which would like to help develop a video game for the sport of Olympic / high school wrestling. These include the US Olympic Wrestling Team, Real Pro Wrestling (The new Major League of Amateur Wrestling), the National High School Coaches Association and many others that can provide direct marketing to the global wrestling community and also bring in product placement to the video game.

At this point I am looking for a game developer to partner with. Any help in this matter is appreciated. I look forward to your inquiry.

Best regards,

Two useful tutorials, at least one of which was already cited above:

http://www.aaroncox.net/tutorials/2dtutorials/index.html
http://lazyfooproductions.com/SDL_tutorials/index.php

Note that to make use of these, you must have a decent background in C++. They were useful to me because I'm a Computer Science major and C++ is the default language in my studio, so I've taken two semesters (one year) of it in class already. If you have no access to C++ courses (because you're in high school, etc), you WILL need help from someone with a background in C++. Before my college experience, I had no idea how to set up a compiler on my windows machine or where to begin learning C++, even with the books I bought. You should be able to find someone near you with a computer coding background, and even if you study with them, realize it will take you about a year to go from No Coding Experience to Able To Use These Tutorials.

Just wanted to say that I LOVED this article. I've been programming in C/Perl/PHP for 8 years, and finally got around to really learning C++. The article was just what I need to step from programmer to game programmer. ^_^

Also wanted to post a note directly to anyone who is complaining about the article: You need to know how to program before you can make a video game. You can learn while you make a video game, but get the docs, some good tutorials, and some good books that are specifically about learning the language you choose. Then read them all, do all of the excercises (even the dumb ones), and practice practice practice. Until you get very well acquainted with your programming language, you'll have a terrible time trying to make any game more complicated than pong.

The portal to code hell is on my desktop. ^_^

I agree with the kind of thinking provided in this article. Anyone who wants o make a game gets the itch when they have an idea they want to see become a reality.
However, the game-learning sequence is focused on action games. Not necessarily shooters, but ones which need some kind of physics. Jumping, collision detection, trajectories... You *could* use collision detection in chess, but that would be overkill(Boolean 'occupied' would be good enough.)
Replications of boardgames might be good for this kind of programming. But I'd like to see more experienced game programmers' opinions. (I'm still on program #1.)

Just had to say I randomly found this article while gearing up to get back to one of my "learning" games, and agree with the sentiments throughout. Next time someone asks, instead of just unleashing my usual rant--I'll send them here. :)

Having produced a few unpolished games akin to breakout and tetris already your words on polish have inspired me to go back and grind some of the rough edges of my games out, to produce something that is more of an accomplishment than a "yeah i can program that game mechanic."

Thanks!
