R rating plan for gory video games

Rating system additions are being pushed to add new rating for games that are considered worse than MA15+, which is the current worst video game rating.

This is yet another issue that has its origins in the Manhunt controversy. Read the article for more information.

I'm confused

Europe has its own rating system?

[there is an R-equiv using the ESRB ratings, it is M [17+ I guess], and there is the X equiv [AO, adults only]]

also, nothing that I would have to register to read the article would be appreciated in the future

i doubt it will make any difference

no one pays attention to the ratings anyway

Why is 15+ the "worst" rating? Games with this rating are usually some of the best. ??

"Worst" as in more violence, etc. Definetly not for kids. What a parent might consider worst for his/her child. Ad infinitem.

This article is referring to video game ratings in Australia. In Australia, the most mature (not "worst") rating available is MA15+ (restricted to people 15 and older).

For years now, australian gamers have been asking for an R rating. Games are often banned/censored here, such as GTA3 and the new Lesuire Suit Larry game (although I don't know if this has been confirmed yet), leaving australian gamers having to buy them internationally, from New Zealand or the US.

In Australia we don't have a R18+ rating for games, only movies. No LSL for us hehe.

Ohh well importing still works... Though you'd think with the FTA we would get access but who knows...

Doesn't bother me much, R18+ would be nice, but always Censorship wins.

Governments have been trying to tell us lately that piracy funds terrorism...all we have to do is get through to them that censorship encourages piracy and we have a winner :-P

*sigh*

We've been screaming for an R rating for years, but it has fallen on the deaf ears of a government that still believe games are for kids only. And this is exactly the problem. A lot of people, including the majority of all parents, still believe that video games are just for kids!

The only reason that an R rating has never been implemented, despite all the attempts over the years, is so that these violent games do not fall into the hands of children. And that makes the very rating itself seem hypocritical. But then, children under 15 never really had a problem buying the MA15+ games anyway, or at least convincing their parents to buy them.

P.S. It's illegal to import banned games.

I also heard you can get a $10,000AU fine just for having a copy of Manhunt that you purchased before the ban.
