| Three different terms referring to the same item. I've always wondered why "joy pad" was considered an appropriate name. I guess it may have stemmed from "joystick". Which brings another question... why is it called a joystick? Is it a stick that brings joy? I've come to accept gamepad and game controller as more appropriate terms. I use "gamepad" most of the time, because that's what I've been taught since I was kid, and 99.9% of the people around me use that term too. Game controller is more on the technical side. What term do you use? And why? And what's with the "joy-" prefix? :P Antinormal (My Blog) | Rigfoundry | Sliding8 | SimpleIRC |

| a joystick is a flight control type stick. <-- i spose ur correct? a gamepad is a pad like ps2, xbox etc. <-- pretty obvious origins joypad afaik is just another name for a gamepad. <-- since we already called it a joy stick, why not call it a joy pad i spose? |

| They arn't the same item. A joystick actually has a stick. A gamepad is a pad type controller(think SNES). I suppose a "Game controller" would be like the controllers for the modern consoles with both a stick and directional pad. |

What I meant was that the "game pad" may have been called "joy pad", since we already had the "joy stick". So yes, I have a little issue with the "joy-" prefix ![]() |

Quote: Bloody good question. Wikipedia has this to say: Quote: IMHO, a "Joyce Stick" sounds like a plausible explaination of the original word. |

| Well I think that the guys that came up with the term "joystick" probably spent a lot of time playing with their own "joystick". Hence why it was later renamed "controller". That's my theory. |

| joystick = those flight sim things, atari controllers, etc gamepad = (S)NES, genesis etc. joypad = ps2, xbox, gamecube - because it's held like a gamepad and has sticks on it, duh Although I usually just say 'controller' for ps2 controller or in general, 'joystick' for my logitech joystick, and 'gamepad' for my pc ps2-shaped controller because that's what it says on the box it came in. I used 'joypad' in the topic I started because that simply made a much better tag-line: "I get no joy from my joypad" vs "I get no pleasure from my gamepad" |
