I want to find help with my game/project:

Help Wanted notices at GameDev.Net must follow a required template. This is for two main reasons:
  1. Answers to the majority of common questions will already be in your post.

  2. Filling out the template will force you to think about your project; if you're unable to or have difficulty filling out the template you may wish to consider some more research and/or planning before posting.

It is recommended that you also try advertising in other relevant forums and online communities -- particularly when looking for artists -- in order to increase your chances of finding suitable help. Please read and respect the rules of this and any other online communities you visit looking for help, and don't just spam your requests where they aren't wanted/welcome.

You can find the required template here. You may also be interested in the Guide To Succesful Posting written by one of our members, Patrick "mntlinstituteflr" Cason, particularly if this is your first time posting or if you're not happy with the responses you're receiving.

I want to find help with my MMO game/project:

MMO projects must be posted with a thread title (i.e. what you type into the subject box) beginning with "[MMO]". Other than that posts for MMO projects should be treated the same as for all other projects and must follow the required template.

I want to offer help or services to other users or join someone else's team:

Users who wish to offer help or services to others may do so by making a post in the forum. Posts of this type are not required to follow a specific template but can find an optional template and list of suggested information to include HERE.

Policy Changes:

1. Posts not using the mandatory template will be removed from the forum.
Rather than simply warning users in-thread that they must edit their post and closing those that fail to comply I will be deleting the threads outright. The user in question will recieve a PM containing:
  • An explanation
  • a link to the template (this thread) and FAQ
  • the text of their original post
  • a source copy of the original post if any formatting had been applied

MMO projects not correctly tagged with "[MMO]" in the title will be treated as unformatted.

2. Posts for projects blatantly and knowingly violating the IP of another company or individual will be closed.
Obviously we are not able to enforce the intellectual property rights of other individuals and/or entities with 100% effectiveness and may at times miss the occasional project where we are unfamiliar with the IP in question, but it is my belief that closure of those threads that obviously violate IP rights will lead to an improvement in the overall quality of available projects as well as reducing the clutter of impractical threads.

Users making such posts will be allowed to repost after either demonstrating permission to use the IP in question to my satisfaction or re-branding their project to be legal. The revised FAQ will contain an expanded section on IP laws with a selection of appropriate links for further reading.

LOOKING FOR HELP - REQUIRED TEMPLATE

Help Wanted posts must be formatted according to the template found in this post unless the poster has obtained special permission from me before posting.

Using the template:
  1. Your post should be formatted so that the headings in the template clearly stand out from the other text. Either:
    • Copy & Paste the template from here to retain bold formatting, or

    • Ensure that you apply formatting that in some way makes the headings stand out in the post.

  2. Don't forget to give your thread a meaningful title -- it shouldn't be overly long, but do try to be descriptive -- everyone is looking for help, so you don't need to write that in your thread title.

  3. If your project is an MMO your thread title (i.e. what you type in the 'subject' box) must start with "[MMO]"

  4. All sections should be filled out unless marked as otherwise in the instructional text.

  5. The italic text is instructional and explains what should go in each section of the template. It should be deleted and replaced with the relevant information about your project. If (and only if) the instructions say a section is optional you should also leave out the heading if you choose not to fill out the information.

The template:

<b>Team name:</b>
The name of your team or company, though be careful to abide by the faq and not mislead anybody into thinking it's a registered company if this is not true. This section is optional.

<b>Project name:</b>
The name or working title of your game/project. If you have no specific project at present (i.e. hiring for a longer term team) or have not yet named your project you may choose to leave this out.

<b>Brief description:</b>
A brief overview of the project including how long it has currently been in production and a description of the genre and defining features of your game. For those with no specific project a statement of your group's goals or a mission statement can go here.

<b>Target aim:</b>
Shareware/Freeware/retail/etc. For those not forming a team for a specific project, you could put some long or short term plans here.

<b>Compensation:</b>
Can you pay, or are you offering a percentage of potential revenue (this is not the same as up-front or contracted payment)? Can you put it in writing for potential help?

<b>Technology:</b>
Target system, programming language and/or tools, artist tools, sound tools, etc. If you're planning to develop for consoles, expect to be asked how you intend to pay the expensive licencing fees and aquire appropriate dev-kits.

<b>Talent needed:</b>
List the people you need, their expected tasks and any experience needed.

<b>Team structure:</b>
List the people who are currently in the team, how long they've been there, and most importantly what YOU do.

<b>Website:</b>
Link to your website, even if it's a work-in-progress. Use html tags to make it a clicky link. If you don't have a website you may leave this section out, but it is recommended particularly for larger projects that you set up something.

<b>Contacts:</b>
Your email address/forum/etc...

<b>Previous Work by Team:</b>
Short description/links to previous projects by the team or prominent team-members to show your experience, otherwise 'none'. This section is not optional.

<b>Additional Info:</b>
Anything else you want to say, snippets of the story/design, screenshots, etc. This section is optional but strongly recommended, most people should be able to think of something.

<b>Feedback:</b>
NONE/ENCOURAGING ONLY/ANY
Choose what level of feedback you'd like to recieve, and delete the one that doesn't apply.

OFFERING HELP/SERVICES - OPTIONAL TEMPLATE

Help Wanted posts from users offering help or services to other users are not required to follow a specific template when posting but are strongly encouraged to provide plenty of information. The following is an optional template that such users may either apply to their posts or can use as a checklist of suggested information.

The template:

<b>Name:</b> Yours or your company's name.
<b>Website:</b> A link to your website and/or portfolio.
<b>Expected Compensation:</b> Are you looking for paying positions only, or are there any conditions you require a project meet to work with you?
<b>Contact Information:</b> How you wish to be contacted.
<b>Previous Projects:</b> Any previous projects you have worked on, samples of your work, etc.
