 DotA Allstars
Post New Topic  Post Reply
Hey everyone, just curious if there are any other DotA players here at GD. If there are enough players maybe we could get together some sort of GD DotA tournament for fun or something.

For those of you who haven't played it; DotA is a custom map for Warcraft III TFT which has grown into a 'mod' really with a huge fan-base. Probably the most addicting game I have ever played (more so then CS even). Here is the link to the website, but it's not my fault if you find yourself spending more than an hour a day playing ... DotA Allstars

I can't stand that map. Most of the public games are filled with rude, arrogant people (worse than 4vs4 even!). Not only that, but the map plays pretty bad on older computers. Not to mention the "official clan" of it has so many inane rules it isn't even funny; such as the rule that you have to provide proof that you had no choice but to leave the game (such as proof of a power outage) in order to not get banned/kicked out of the clan. Then, if you do find a good public game, you can't leave unless you want to get kicked out of 50% of the DOTA games because everybody in the game will go into every other game screaming IN ALL CAPS NONETHELESS that you had left the game and were the son of the devil and broke laws and looked at porn.

In other words: the map would be great if it were single player.

EDIT: I also don't know how anyone who hasn't played it before can even dream of starting. Most of the time if you attempt to download the map from a public game you'll get kicked, even if you are downloading at a very high rate. Then if you manage to get the map from the site and join a game, odds are you'll be attacked with every over-used insult that plauges online gameing simply for having never played before. After several attempts at getting into the game, I got sick of the constant insults and numerous cries of the word "noob" and decided never to play it again unless the game is entirely made up of friends.

I like it, but the people are generally rude, with comments like: "OMG n00b y dont u just leave!!!"
Plus, it's kind of slow on my computer so I get killed a lot...

Amen to that :)

Yes I do agree that there is a lot of crap that goes on in that game, people are very rude, and people are very poor sports as well. However, I still find it a an enjoyable game, but I also play it LAN quite a bit with friends which makes the game a lot better since you don't have to deal with the "OMFG!!11 FFS" crap.

I guess the problem with that game now, is it isn't very beginner friendly ... it's sort of like CS 1.6 now, where everyone who plays, plays like two+ hours a day, and are insanly good at it. I've been playing DotA off and on for probably around a year, and when I started it wasn't so bad, now beginners get bashed a lot. It's sad to see.

But the reason for banning people when leaving, is that once someone leaves the game really looses momentum. I've played games which are 'ban-listed' and have had to leave and just explained why and everyone was OK with it. Other times the host is totally brainless and says he's gonna ban me from the internet.

All in all I still think it's a great game / map whatever, but it would be a lot better if you could turn off chat all together in WC.

Yes, it's a good game, I have to admit it. But like you said, it's totally not beginner friendly. There are so many items, that just to be bought in the right order, and so many special abilities you need to be aware of and so on.
And it's very frustrating when seeing games named like: "DotA NO NOOBS!!" or "DOTA -AR pros only!!!"
Another extremely frustrating thing is that the hero will go on and attack anyone in the range, and sometimes even engage enemy units and auto follow them. That's why I die most of the times. A shortcut to the spells would also be extremely useful, especially for those with a slower internet connection.
[edit] They really should make more 'n00bs only' maps, where you can go and make mistakes without idiots cursing at you.

I like it. If anyone calls me a n00b, I'll just mock them or do everything I can to piss them off / get them to leave. It usually works and makes it even funner - trust me!

I play it with friends. Its best to play with people you know because playing with strangers is just too stupid most of the times. People can really ruin the game by doing really stupid things like feeding the other team, or not working as a team. Its a great map though and great gameplay. I was actually planning to make a standalone version of the game, but just dont have the time.

If there is to be a GD team or group for dota, let me know. I can join as well.

Lots of true stuff here...

So true. DotA isn't even that fun and practically everyone who plays it is a prick. It's just one of the many reasons I don't play WC3 anymore.

You can try TD games, many people are actually intelligent (they have their share of morons, but not as much as the DotA players, who mostly seem to derive pleasure from insulting newbies rather than play the god damn game).

Yeah, most people are prics who play that map. There's something about online competition involving orcs, pandas, and sorcery that makes someone want to call someone a noob. I actually really enjoy that map, despite that 95% of the players try to pick the same hero and do the same growth strategy every map.

Quick run down for people who are interested in playing it, but don't want to be constantly nagged by stupid people.

-Download the map from the website. 99.9% of map hosts are impatient/live in anartica/use 24.4k modems/use spyware/are pre-teens. Better to shorten the length of time they interact with you through chat/kicking.

-Once the map is acquired, play it single player. Things to learn here:

1. Where to buy what item. Even from the secret shop.
2. How to combine items.
3. What 'Orb effects do not stack' means.
4. How weak your hero is; How fast enemies kill it.
5. The skills of a hero or two. No need to memorize everything about them, but enough to generally know what point should go where.
6. Where Roshan is, and why you shouldn't shake his hand.

-Once the initiation is done, go and play a few maps online. Play conservative, and don't get bent out of shape if you keep dying. Every map has someone on one side of the fight that dies all the time. While your teammates may blame you, they've been in the same situation, whether they admit it or not.

-Watch what other players buy. Most melee types get a general set of equipment, same with mages, same with ranged. Emulating that equipment won't make you spectacular, but you'll atleast be passible. For the best selection of equipment really depends on your hero, what heroes you're going up against, and monetary/exp distrubution.

HINTS:
Pick a ranged unit starting out. It helps you keep out of harms way, and gives you a chance to run.

Boots of speed/ring of Health is good for almost any hero.

Destroying a enemy tower is worth mucho money. The person who gets the money is the one who dealt the finishing blow.

Destroying a enemy barracks (aka 'rax') makes the corresponding unit on your team roughly 3x as powerful, and worth less money. Destroying all the enemies rax will cause super creeps. Basically it means you win the game.

Hope this helps!

Nice intro Mawr. The biggest mistake I see new people make in DotA is attempt to rush their opponents, it's better to hang back in DotA and take advantage of others mistakes, not try and hunt others down (although this is another part of the game as well).

Good luck for those who try DotA out for the first time!

The real problem with DoTA is that it's a 12 person game and there's always some lamer trying to play it on a 450 MHz PII, so everyone has to wait several minutes for him to load the map. Then someone drops and everyone leaves. It can seriously take 15 minutes to get into a good game.

I think DoTA would work much better as a stand-alone game that was better optimized for DoTA-ness... (both in terms of resource usage and tracking player stats so that you can prevent leavers from entering your game in the first place)

But yeah, DoTA is more fun than the original game.

The newest version 6.14 is pretty good now, the game load only takes about 1 to 2 minutes ... I remember though in 5.84, I had a game that actually took around 12 minutes to load.

I play DotA when there is nothing to do. That new version tremendously boots the loading time. I played it on a 950Mhz comp and it loads without lagging. A huge improvement.

As for noobs, they do ruin games because they tend to feed enemies without even realizing it. And they refused to be called a noob. They die a lot, can't use the character they are using, buy the wrong items, etc. They get bashed a lot, get over it. In order to fit in that community, all you need to do is to be a prick yourself. No, being nice to these kids won't work. It's an online video game community anyway, who cares.

Here are some common noob mistakes:
- Get themselves get hit. Don't freaking do it. Keep your HP above 50%. You need those HP to chase escaping enemies or run away from them, etc. Don't even let creeps hit you. Back up to your tower.

- Don't even try to take towers down if you are < level 11. Towers can kill you in 5 hits. Don't even go near them unless there are lots of creeps around to cover you up.

- Don't die. Just don't die.

Just do the following and you will find DotA enjoyable. It's just too bad that some games can last up to 2 hours.

Yeah I find good games take about an hour, when they go on for too long, it's usually just becasue your team (or their team) is too lazy to finish the game.
I like short mode (-sm) a lot though, then the game pretty much won't last longer than 45 minutes.
