December 2005 DirectX SDK now available

The Windows Graphics and Gaming Technology Team is proud to announce the latest version of the DirectX SDK, available for immediate download!

The latest SDK, as always, can be found at http://msdn.com/directx/sdk.

So what's new? Well, some of the really cool additions and updates are:

- Direct3D 10 Technology Preview: That's not a typo. If you have Windows Vista, you'll be thrilled to get your hands on this _very early_ preview of the new version of Direct3D.

- Microsoft Cross-Platform Audio Creation Tool (XACT Beta): Our audio geniuses are at it again.

- Managed DirectX for .NET Framework 2.0 (Beta): Much improved from October's SDK, this new version includes support for the retail version of Visual Studio 2005 family of products.

- Windows Vista Game Explorer (Beta): "Getting your game on" takes on new meaning in Windows Vista. Learn how to get your game integrated into the Game Explorer.

- DirectX Runtime: We've now created a cumulative redist to help you address some of the small (and not-so-small) annoyances with the runtime. In addition, we now offer a web installer that will incrementally update your end user to the latest DirectX runtime libraries.

- XInput: New and improved, with an article included on how to use DirectInput and XInput together!

- Tools: PIX and DxErr have been improved

- Samples: New samples on HDR, as well as numerous additions to help you learn Direct3D 10, have been added. Also returning by popular demand: the Pick sample.

- Technical Article Updates: We've added tons of new technical articles. Find them all in the DirectX SDK Sample Browser.

Windows 2000 is once again a supported platform.

(Edit: I tried installing it today and it doesn't work).

Where does it say that? Windows 2000 support across the whole of Microsoft was dropped on July 30th.

But it's still on the reference rasterizer though

Thanks for dropping the ancient cards support with dx10, really! That is the best thing that have happened in years.

It appears as though DX10 requires Vista, so I imagine that anything that runs Vista, will work.

If you try to run the DX10 samples in XP it complains that it's missing d3d10.dll.

A December SDK? But I haven't even installed the October SDK yet! Are they planning to continue releasing a new SDK every two months?

Yeah, I'd assume so, since they've been doing that for the last year or so (since April I think).

Oh, you poor, poor soul. You sure D3DX and the Effects framework for D3D9 and 10 won't change your mind?

Not quite. Vista's GUI is built on Direct3D 9 (more specifically, 9.L I think) such that you only need a current SM2 graphics card to run Vista in it's full Aero-Glass glory. Direct3D 10 requires more than any piece of publicly available hardware offers (e.g. the Geometry Shader).

I would imagine that D3D10 capable hardware will exist on or very soon after Vista launches.

October 2004 was the first of the 2-monthly updates, so this marks the 7th of the series. I've not heard anything to indicate that this cycle is going to change - I'm expecting a February, April, June... etc... release

That quote is in reference to the runtime version of DirectX. It has nothing to do with the SDK version.

Check the DirectX FAQ under "Should game developers still be publishing games for Windows 2000?", as to whether they care about Windows 2000 support.

There is no mention that the SDK supports Windows 2000 for development.

I don't think that's true at all. From the release notes:
Quote:
This SDK is supported for installation on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista December 2005 CTP using Visual Studio .Net 2003 or 2005.

Hmmn, I read this: DirectX December 2005
And I figured that it does support Windows 2000.

Previous versions, such as: DirectX October 2005 and DirectX August 2005
Didn't list Windows 2000.

(Edit: I tried installing it today and it doesn't work).

As far as supported OS's go, I seem to remember Win2K was added to the "unsupported" list in the February 2005 SDK but it would still install. As of the April 05 SDK the installer would actually stop you from installing if it detected a Win2K OS.

You can still install any of them by unpacking the msi(with LesMSIrable), putting all the files in the right place, and running the install for the runtime.
