"Shadow of the Colossus" Dominates 6th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards

Sony Computer Entertainment's PlayStation® 2 adventure "Shadow of the Colossus" was the recipient of five top honors including Best Game at the 6th annual Game Developers Choice Awards.

The ceremony, produced and hosted by the Game Developers Conference (GDC) and presented by the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), is the only peer-based, open nomination awards program in the industry where honors are bestowed to developers by developers.

Recipients were announced last night at the 2006 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Jose.

"Game creators have earned the recognition we give other celebrities such as movie stars and pop singers, and they've provided an undeniable contribution to world culture in light of the hours of entertainment they deliver," said Jamil Moledina, director, Game Developers Conference. "Games really are a 21st century art form, and our goal in hosting and producing the Game Developers Choice Awards is to validate the achievements of these creative artists."

Nominations were free of charge and open to all IGDA members, ensuring that the nominees reflect the international development community's opinions. The IGDA membership voted on the finalists.

"Developers fuel the creative engine that propels the gaming industry forward and it is of paramount importance to recognize their hard work producing brilliant games," said Jason Della Rocca, executive director, IGDA.

The 6th annual Game Developer Choice Awards are supported by Platinum Sponsor Motorola and Gold Sponsor AGEIA.

And its well deserved too! If people made less shooters, focused less on the 'genre' than on the creativity, we would get more awesome games like Shadow of the Colossus.

It certainly did have some impressive visuals. I haven't played the game, but I'm sure they can't all have been cut scenes. They used a background blur technique that's sure to become the new must-have (a lot like lense-flare was treated a few years ago). The blur effect imparts a sort of artistic still photo feeling, very nice.

I'd like to know what basis they used for 'Best Game'. The game is cool, and I own it for the PS2, but it's the same game over and over after the first 10 minutes. The replay value of it is practically nil, and the originality of the game is all in the first 10 minutes.

It seems to me that a team of developers made a really spectactular engine, and then threw some stuff onto it and called it a game.

I must say when I played the demo it scared the crud out of me to see the first boss just pop out of no where. The grafics were lifelike and the game play was simple yet it made you think,"okay how in the world am I gonna beat this one." It makes sense that it did great.
