Nintendo GDC Keynote: Sega Games on Revolution, Zelda DS

At a keynote address in conjunction with the 2006 Games Developers Conference, Nintendo has revealed that Sega Genesis titles will be made available as part of the Virtual Console system for the Nintendo Revolution. They also announced a new game in the Legend of Zelda series for the Nintendo DS handheld, titled The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

Sega Genesis titles available on Virtual Console

Nintendo's Virtual Console is going to allow Revolution owners to download and play classic NES, SNES and Genesis games through the Revolution download service. With a planned game library of more than 1,000 titles for the Genesis, SEGA plans to provide a "best of" selection for gamers, enabling them to relive their favourite titles.

"SEGA continues to develop innovative ways to showcase its new generation leadership," states Naoya Tsurumi, Chief Executive Officer, SEGA of America, Inc. and SEGA Europe, Ltd. "SEGA's support of the Virtual Console system will introduce more gamers to classic Genesis hits and reinvigorate many of our popular brands."

There are also plans for titles from the TurboGrafx console (a system jointly developed by NEC and Hudson) to be released on the service.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

Information about the newly announced Nintendo DS game is currently hard to come by, but initial reports suggest the game has a cel-shaded look similar to that of Wind Waker on the Nintendo GameCube. The game is displayed on one screen while the other shows a map or inventory. Gamers will be able to use the touch screen and stylus in various ways, including directing boomerang shots, plotting out the path of a ship, drawing shapes for spells and writing numbers (the reason for this is currently unknown).

The all too brief demo shown at the Nintendo keynote also showed Navi, Link's fairy companion from the awesome Ocarina of Time. There was also a boss battle with a squid-like creature and a clip of Link sailing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. My genesis finally died, and frankly playing on the PC just doesn't do it for me. The Revolution has officially been moved to the top of my list.

Also, I can't wait until I get to write numbers in the new Zelda game. Just the other day, I was thinking to myself: "Do you know what Ocarina of Time needs? The ability to draw numbers."

I can live without another gimmicky zelda game, but Mutant League Hockey on a next gen system? It's like unicorns just crapped a rainbow on my brain!

This is great news, everyone loves genesis...but the TG16 really brings me back. Anyone ever play Millitary Madness? Ahhhhh memories

It'd be interesting to see how many units of the Revolution get sold solely for its Virtual Console capabilities.

I have for long doubted on wether Nintendo Revolution will stand a chance against Sony and Microsoft.

I doubt no more!

Ok, cool, so now there are about four legal ways to play Genesis exclusives:

1. Own a Genisis console (Still have mine)
2. Subscribe to the GameTap service
3. Play Sega game compilations
4. Revolution

I think the real "Revolution" here is that one of the big gaming companies are offering what is basically emulation support out of the box.
If the release of the PSP and it's avid Homebrew support has shown us anything is that people want to play what they know and love when they like. If the console doesn't support it (and Sony has done everything in it's power to stop homebrew apps), hackers will find a way. By embracing this emulation methodology (albeit limited in scope) can only be a step in the right direction. Why buy a console that only plays the latest graphical XBox 360 games when you can play the latest Nintendo games plus all the games you loved as a kid.
Nostalgia is a powerful sales tool - well done Nintendo.
Steele.

im gonna change my previous opion (which was i didnt think nintendo was gonna sell many consoles this round)

i believe if they can sell the new one at say $100-120 (vs $300-450) even though it doesnt support hdtv etc, theyre gonna sell shitloads. i dont think theyll beat the ps3 + be number 1 but i believe theyll sell about 50% of the ps3s figure.

btw i believe playing old sega titles aint gonna be much of a drawcard to many ppl

Yes! Oh man, I loved the TG16 (and Duo for that matter) so much. I wonder if TGCD/SuperCD's will be available on the Revolution. Or if they'll release some of the Japanese games that never made it out here.. like Dracula X or Y's IV. Or Cosmic Fantasy 3...

I reckon they could go all out Jaguar, 3DO, DOS (wing commander, crusader), PS3, XBOX360.

Ahh, the TG16, still have one. It's the first console my family ever owned. It was given as a gift to much parental scorn, lol. Still, I never got into it, too young, so we only have 2 games. The one that came with it and this racing RPG thing.

But seriously, if Nintendo can get all those back catalogues together, and maybe brush them up with some fancy filtering, it would be worth buying the Rev imho. It would put Sony's back catalogue to shame.

I don't know about putting Sony's back catalogue to shame, but yes, it would be a nice back catalogue. Remember, Sony has some of the best games of the last 10 years in their back catalogue.

I hate it when developers do that [fancy filtering]. I just wanna enjoy the classics in all their classic, pure, un-fooled-around-with glory.

phantasy star 2, final fantasy 6 and chrono trigger all on the same system on a machine that I don't have to give up for work purposes :D.

Now to only hope that Bloody Wolf makes it into the library my social life will disappear.
