Song person/people needed for puzzle game

Team name:

Project name:
Project X-RaptorDeathAngelUberDarknessAxeManiacUnderworldGhostBryngyrWyrm

. . .okay, not really. I just think people who come up with testosterone-charged names for their little projects are funny. The game's called Bulldozer.

Brief description:
I need some music for an updated version of my magnum opus (snork), Bulldozer. Basically it's a 60-level version of Sokoban, but with a cute little Bulldozer motif. It's been on the market off-n-on since 1995, and it has sales into the hundreds of thousands (if not a million. I haven't taken a calculator to the sheets in quite a while).

And I finally made a new version. It's a 180-level sequel with animation and music.

Actually, right now it's just animation with NO music. That's where you come in.

Target aim:
Shareware with possible retail possibilities depending on whether or not I can convince a discount publisher that 90% of gross profits are a worthwhile exchange for some shelf space on the discount rack.

Compensation:
Yes I'm paying. I'll likely be paying a flat per-song fee unless you have a better idea.

One thing that's important is that the licensing model is "Johnhattan gets everything". When I buy the song, I get the song. I don't get a one-year license or a per-product license or anything else that guarantees that you'll have your hand out if the game and/or song achieves some measure of success. If you make the music, I want an exclusive unlimited license for its use. As for your usage of the music, you're free to include bits of it on your site or resume or demo-reel as an example of your l33t musical skillz, but that's it.

If you have an existing song that you think will work but has a nonexclusive license with someone else or is a piece of "musical clipart" that you're selling on your site, I'll give it a listen. If it'll fit the game, I'll be happy to buy it. Send me a URL.

The bottom line is that I wanna pay a flat fee for the music, and I don't want you coming back later with new terms if the game goes retail or I put the music in the sequel or the music ends up on a TV commercial because the music got more popular than the friggin' Super Mario theme.

That's the deal. I recently fired my previous music-guy because he started adding terms to the license (along with cranking up the price). Those are the terms. If you don't like 'em, press your "back" button now and pretend you didn't read this.

Technology:
The game's written in Flash, so that means that I'll be importing MP3. I'm not hung up on whatever format you have. If you send me something in WAV or OGG or even MIDI, I'll be able to get it in there. Stereo's preferable.

Talent needed:
A music guy, or guys. I'm hoping to get 6-7 pieces of music.

1. 4-5 Level themes. These are cute bouncy little tunes, suitable for a puzzle game. They should be easy to listen to (i.e. not death metal or hard techno) and so viral that you find yourself humming them hours later. Maybe a minute each. Loop-able is preferred, but not required.

2. A main theme. This'll most likely be the level theme that I like most and thus gets promoted to main theme. Same parameters as above.

3. 1-2 "victory themes". This should be some kind of obnoxious 10-second flourish that gives the user some self-esteem from winning.

As an example of the structure, here's a demo version of "Duck Tiles", which is structured very similarly (except the web-version doesn't have a main menu) to Bulldozer. Note the cute bouncy little tunes that accompany the similarly-light gameplay. That's the kind of thing I want.

Duck Tiles, however, is using pre-1922 (i.e. public domain) music. For Bulldozer, I wanted something with a little more "personal touch". If you can work in some cute motifs that follow the theme (pushing rocks with a bulldozer), then more power to you.

Extra points if you can come up with lyrics :)

Team structure:
There's me. I've been at this full-time for ten years as of June.

And there's you. You're the one doing the music for the game. Impress me.

How we'll work together is that you'll get me a piece of music. I'll tell you what I do or don't like about it. You'll then futz with it until it's perfect. Also I'll be putting your music into my not-yet-for-public-consumption web version of Bulldozer and sending you a URL so you can see how well it works in the game itself.

Please email me rather than messaging me. I don't check gamedev messages that often, so email is the way to go.

Additional Info:
What I'd like from you right off is an example of your style and maybe a quick snippet of what you think would work well as a theme for a puzzle game. A text description is fine. A musical "sketch" of your idea would be even better.

I also wanna know. . .

1. How many songs you think you can do for me. I don't have an unlimited time-window, so if you can just do one or two songs, be honest. If you can just do one song, it won't put you out of the running. In fact, I'd probably prefer working with more than one person, as it'll give the music a bit more depth, as you'll all have different styles. Also if one person completely flakes (and if you're a music person, you will. It's in your DNA), I have others to fall back upon.

2. A per-composition flat fee price for the song(s).

Feedback:
Anything you want. Call me a clueless noob if it makes you feel good. I can take it.

I'm new to this forum, and you've obviously enjoyed some success with this title, but trying to recruit team members or talent by incinuating that they are universally predisposed to "flaking" might not be the best route. I'm a composer myself and I can understand you wanting to be protected against someone not fulfilling his end of a the contract, but for what it is worth, I've worked on a lot of films and other projects where I failed to get paid on time or in full, or get the correct credit or even a print, but when I submit for new jobs I don't accuse directors or producers of being genetically designed to fail in fulfilling their contractual obligations.

Just my 2 cents, good luck with your title.

Ahh, excellent point. Thanks for keeping me from forgetting that!

. . .another requirement for the job is that you have a thick enough skin to put up with an opinionated knowitall sumbitch such as myself.

heheh, I could probably handle that kind of peron :P I've recently done music for a puzzle game. How much would you pay for a song?

Hehe, good luck John. I'm certain you'll find plenty of muscians who want their music in your game. I recommend David Orr and Nathan Madsen.

Sorry about the lack of updates, guys. I've been in the hospital for a couple of days because of the foot-eatin' bacteria. If you emailed me, I'll be in touch with you again in a day or two as I get caught up with the inbox.

And if you sent me an IM, you didn't read the rules. Email me, durnit.

I think I have enough people now. I'll probably post again if anyone flakes.
