I almost feel bad... no, not really
Post New Topic  Post Reply
I'm mean, I know.

This is an update on my prank on Virginia Heffernan, a writer for the New York Times that has become obsessed with the reality game LonelyGirl15.

---------------------------------
Dear Mr. Bourre,

I'm a writer for the New York Times, working on a story about lonelygirl15, on YouTube.
As a game designer and someone interested in Thelema, you seem like you might be
able to shed some light on the phenomenon. Do you know about lg15? Do you have any idea who's behind it? Are you behind it? Let me know. Email anytime.

All best,

Virginia Heffernan
television critic, The New York Times

-----------------------------------
My reply
Not sure how you found me, but I'm guessing you were (somehow) on my website, maybe searching for Thelema... its just the name of one of my games.

From the looks of it, it's probably viral advertising (Google "I Love Bees" for a good example). Seems like it's working :)
-----------------------------------
This email was then sent to my friend Nick, with her "accidentally" on the reply list as well
Hey Nick,

This is getting hilarious. The New York Times... the NYFUCKINGTIMES! We're either going to be heroes, or be in deep, deep shit by the time this is finished.

Joe
------------------------------------
Her reply (after a few other quick emails)
Wild. Can I call you? Or I'm at *** *** ****.
-------------------------------------

Now click on the link below, and read #3 on her newest blog entry :)

NYTimes Screens

Wow. "Could he be telling the truth?". I think she knows the answer to that already... could she be spreading misinformation?

I still think she is part of the game.

Update: A newer link from the blog pokes fun at me (ie: she's pissed at me). It's not funny anymore, it wouldn't have been funny until she responded anyway. Anybody linking from her blog: welcome to GameDev!

can I get some kind of summary? I don't want to look through all her inane videos just to figure out what's going on?

I haven't watched many of them, but from what I gather it is a young girl in California, home schooled, and her friend Daniel. Her parents are strict and she stays in her room most of the time making these videos. She is a practicing Thelemite, and is about to be in some sort of magick ceremony.

Probably advertising some horror movie.

If it is produced, I don't appreciate the stratification and marginalization of homsechoolers as "weird".

Yeah, I don't get this whole thing. I mean, I guess it's impressive that a girl gets popular on the internet without taking her clothes off, but...

It is most definitely produced, either as an ad or an art-school piece (my guess would be an ad, since August something or other has been hinted as a possible announcement day).

This Heffernan lady could very well be part of the game, working along with them to get the word out. If not, though, she's really obsessed with this thing.

You know, I can't get interested by this at all.

Spam is even worse when it's a tease.

Now you just have to keep pulling her along for the ride, I suppose. You should set up a paypal donate link on your website.

Dude she called you "stagey", are you gonna let her get away with that? You should tell her that your game is full of super secret clues to teach her a lesson.

Bollocks to this whole lonelygirl15 thing. If she finds viral/stealth marketing so interesting she should go post on GAF.

Bree is a cute teenager who spends all her time making videos of her not having sex with this guy Daniel that is always in her room. Its seriously the worst porno I've ever seen.

Were you the one who deleted the other thread?

Anyway, I'll be disapointed to find out the "Rite" she is attending is NOT Sex Magick, but then again it may be...

I requested that the thread be deleted because I am easily traced to GameDev (from Google) and wanted to see how far she would go to believe me.

Naw, I'm done screwing with her. I think Nick emailed her and gave it away anyway :)

I was curious about it. But now that its not porno, why bother.

Somebody linked this post from her blog. Ok, prank over. Nothing else to see here

To anyone following the link: your game is interesting, but if she's going to "cold call" email people about the game she has to expect that at least one of them is going to screw with her.

This should be fun, especially since we don't have anonymous posting in the Lounge.

She malformed the link anyway.

Hahaha... a mod asking for spam ;)

I didn't realize there was no anonymous posting here... I don't know if anybody there is so bored as to actually set up an account just to yell at me.

Of course, if somebody does, then the prank is funny again

Weird... It's like they got the guys who made Laguna Beach to redo Clarissa Explains It All as a YouTube video blog.

Obviously it’s not our gloater pal J** B******, who sent me email “by accident” — it looked like it was intended for someone else — suggesting that I’d caught him. He loves his prank, and he deserves to love it.

Sounds happy, doesn't she?

I don't know about happy, but it does sound like she had a smile on her face when she wrote that.

I wonder if I'll get poached by the Chicago Tribune for my part in this sordid affair.

I mean no offense to her... she did nothing wrong. I hope she realizes that. It's like a kid making a prank call with his friend. He and his friend think it was funny, the person on the other line isn't quite as amused. In the end, nobody is hurt.

But yeah, I deserved the "gloater" remark :)

Edit: If anyone is interested, there is a supposed "letter from the creators"... it's either a real disappointment for the fans or a hoax much more cleverly disguised than my own

SHOCK! HORROR!

I, like many other losers on the internet, only held interest for as long as it took me to realize that her pants weren't coming off. I was just quicker than these obsessive assholes.

It turns out they're making a website about the whole thing. Yeah, that'll be dead in the water.

I don't know, I think the whole idea of reality games is pretty interesting. I Love Bees was an example of a reality game done very well. LG15 seems to be fairly mediocre and difficult to find an audience for.

I think they dropped the ball announcing it yesterday. They should have waited until the 12th (Crowleys birthday) because people were expecting something to happen on that day.

I almost wonder if they were trying to stop people from looking for "whom" it is about and start looking for "what" it is about. If I were doing a reality game from home, I definitely wouldn't want people trying to track down my town, or my house. As soon as they come out, then they can focus on the mystery and art without covering the tracks of their filming locations.
