Hi!

This is a 10 year old project I wrote shortly after leaving high school.
I’m posting it here as a look back on how games without OO code used to be programmed.
It was my very first full project in C (++), and (un) fortunately my last in game making! It’s neither a ‘how to’, or well programmed example, but just a look back at what unskilled home hobbiest’s were doing back then.
I’m not very good with my imagination, and so it’s based on a well known character you’ve probably heard about – they’ve been around for ever, and are still popping up on the next-gen consoles. Because I had a framework to adhere to, I was able to concentrate on the code and graphics. Everything is my own hand drawn pixel art (with the exception of the logo), and apart from a few algorithms, so is the program code. It has no sound, accesses the video memory directly in Mode 13h, and only uses 4 keys to play.
But it DOES have a level editor, full source code, an attract mode, and access to the graphics source.
If you let the game run through the intro where Sconic’s waving – level 1 will load automatically, and a recording I made 10 years ago of myself playing part of the level will play. Once finished, it’ll go back to the intro screen again, and then after awhile Level 2’s attract mode will start… it gives you good clues on how to play.

To play:
(Full instructions on play, and using the level editor included in the download)
Use The left, right and up arrow buttons. The Space Bar exits (a hangover feature that I used if my boss walked in while I was testing it).
QAOP were used to resize the window – for slow (<100MHz) machines.

Features :
Full colour 320x200 256 color graphics!
A “record-it-yourself” 4 level attract mode!
Four full levels of play!
Full level editor!
Fast paced action!
Hazards to avoid, and monsters to kill (Level 2 onwards)!

N.B : The game’s stuck to the refresh rate of your monitor… make sure you’re using 60/70Hz… or on todays computers you’ll need the reactions of a ferrit! ;)

I hope you enjoy it,
Bye!

I really liked it, the second level was so harder than de first, the rocks appear to quick out the lava.. impossible to jump over.

And its a pitty that is your last game project, go back to work :)

Wow, that was really cool.

Sorry, it's been moved a bit:

=D

Doesn't work on my Windows 7. It complains about the 64-bitness of it
