Intel Purchases Game Tools Firm Havok

Intel recently signed a definitive agreement to acquire the Irish game tools firm Havok Inc. The release from Intel states:
Quote:
The acquisition will enable developers in the digital animation and game communities to take advantage of Intel's innovation and technology leadership in the creation of digital media.

"Havok is a proven leader in physics technology for gaming and digital content, and will become a key element of Intel's visual computing and graphics efforts," said Renee J. James, vice president and general manager of Intel's Software and Solutions Group. "Havok will operate its business as usual, which will allow them to continue developing products that are offered across all platforms in the industry."

Havok will become a wholly owned subsidiary or Intel.

The whole press release can be read on the Intel website.

Is this the end of Havok?

Developers want Havok to run on AMD, and IBM chips sets (x360 and PS3). Intel wants Havok to run on Intel. That would seem to be a conflict of interest.

Remember when EA bought Renderware? Now they're basically dead. Why? conflict of interest. EA didn't want other developers benefitting from this middleware. Similarly, Intel will not want non-Intel platforms benefitting from their new middleware.

Intel wont be stupid enough to do that. Developers would no longer use the middleware if they are cutting off a great percentage of the market from playing their game. Intel is not a game studio, so it is my strong opinion that they wont cut Havok off from potential buyers by doing something ignorant.

If you don't believe me, then here is a quote straight from the press release:
Quote:
"Havok will operate its business as usual, which will allow them to continue developing products that are offered across all platforms in the industry."

Notice the "across all platforms."

Dave
