'Knights Vs Orcs' - First Public Release
Post New Topic  Post Reply
I have been developing this small fantasy RTS under the 'knights vs orcs' codename for about a year now on my spare time.

The game is based on a free movement (no tiles at all). Original blog post at my site : Post

Your game started right out of the box for me (Windows Server 2003). I got my units to attack the incoming enemies but I had some problems seeing what was actually going on during battle. Pretty soon I was overwhelmed, maybe that's the idea. I played around with most of the controls and they seemed to work fine. Why is there a time limit though?

Kudos to you for making an RTS. Keep it up.

it works right out of the box for me too, xp pro sp3, but i also was overwhelmed fairly quickly. I feel like the orcs spread out on me too well, whereas my knights were too clustered together so only the guys on the outside could fight and were thus outnumbered. I like the animation a lot, i'm impressed that all the characters seem to have 8 degrees of freedom

I'm running Windows XP - the game worked straight away for me to.

The graphics are great.

It looks like it's going to be a really fun game.

I found it difficult to control my knights. I highlighted a group, and right clicked somewhere, and off they went. But I couldn't get them to attack, it seems. For a while, a group was being attacked by some Orcs, and my knights didn't respond (I don't think).

First of all, thanks for the feedback!

There is no real reason for the time limit there. I just thought it would be good to have in alpha release as it is still so unfinished product.

Overwhelmed quickly : It is there for a reason in this release as I wanted to show the real power of small RTS engine : loads of units.. and.. heh.. it's pretty cool too. What was the best kill count you guys got? Did you try buying new troops?

Pathfinding (units get stuck, etc) still needs a lot of work to do. I'll release a new version today which will make it better. Also notice that I cannot make it 'perfect' as it would cost too much processing power as the game logic doesn't use tiles.

Thanks for informing the controlling problems, I'll see if I can find out what is causing it - if you have more specific information available how it happened please email me : arto.ruotsalainen@gmail.com.

Also all gameplay ideas and improvements are more than welcome! :)

Sincerely,

Tested under XP.
I would start to comment with a major regret :
sprites are too small, I suggest to give the ability to zoom the view.
Maybe x2 or x3.
Or give the possibility to the user to switch in full mode screen.
The side scrolling, is missing I'm sure you are working on it ?

Otherwise this is a very very good start keep on working but it would be better with larger characters.
I like the way units can move and attack ennemies.
I suppose that artwork comes from Reiner's tilesets.
If you can, meet a good graphic designer to redraw tiles and sprites, it would be even better.
Graphics from Reiner are very nice but unfortunately you see them in a lot of games

I kicked some orc's asses. The game shutted down after a minute or so without messages.

You could consider implementing a logging utility so people can feed back to you any errors that may happen.

WIN XP SP3

Fired up fine (XP Pro, SP3), but it just closed after about a minute with no error messages.

Thanks for the feedback!

I already fixed the bug, I hope it was the same you guys had.. we'll see that next time. ;)

I'm currently working on improving my pathfinding algorithm, it gets stuck too easily on bigger obstacles.
