| Hey there, I'm a professional animator working at Nickelodeon and lately I've been interested in getting back into doing some 2D sprite work. Right now I'm willing to do some free sprite work or tile work to help out a game that interests me. However if you're wanting me to do a lot of stuff, I'll expect to get paid. As far as 3D work is concerned, I'll only do that if I get paid. I do enough of that right now as it is, so I'm really looking to take a break from it and work on some pixel art. So without further ado, here's the meat and potatoes: Some sprite work I've done: Snapshot of a game I worked on. Pretty much all of the graphics are mine: ![]() Another game I worked on. Again all of the graphics were made by me: ![]() Menu's I designed for the game: ![]() Interior tiles example. All work done by me: ![]() Some weapons and tools: ![]() Eating animation: ![]() Full arm rotations: ![]() A horse: ![]() Character spin: ![]() Character walking: ![]() Female body walking forward. Shows how I set up an animated "skeleton" to base the spritework off of: ![]() ------- Aside from the sprite work, I also do 3D modeling, rigging, animation, lighting and texturing. My professional demo reel for my 3D work can be found at http://www.chrisgottron.com To get in touch with me for questions or comments or whatever, just reply to this thread. I'll read it, I promise. =) |

| Hi ! I found your sprites and your 3D demo reel really interesting ! I`m working on a 2D shooter for pc/xbox360 and could use some help on the project ! I had a post on gamedev a few weeks ago that explains what the game is about, what is expected, as well as screen shots and a playable demo so you can see if the project interests you. Link to Help Wanted Post ! If you have any questions, you may contact either reply here or contact me through e-mail or msn at louislavallee9@hotmail.com |

| Any chance you'd be willing to put together a set of sprites and just releasing it to the community which we could use in exchange for giving you credit/linking to your portfolio? I'm in the middle of doing some background work on a pbbg (e.g. design, coding tools/test cases) so I'm not really looking for art...but having some art I could use later would rock. That is my main reason for the question! Heh. |

Quote: I've found that alot of them are copies (if not the originals themselves) of copyrighted work (e.g. fan made mega-man sprites). Of those that aren't, I can't find a complete set of a consistent style. Whatever I mix and match usually looks wrong to me. The closest I've gotten is the set at http://www.lostdragon.com/ but there aren't enough items in the set to really build a complete game (imo). Perhaps I'm just greedy. ;) I noticed your weapons and tools were similar enough to that set that if I could convince you to put some of those 'out in the open' so to speak I'd have close enough to a set that I'd be able to almost finish the game I have in mind without any further art help if I couldn't find any. |

| Hi Konidias, I really like the style and quality of your 2D work. What kind of games in particular would you be willing to lend a hand for? I've recently started work on a simple 2D adventure game and I think your sprites could set a great tone for the art style of the whole game. Would a single character sprite sheet be a reasonable request with regards to free work? If not, I'd appreciate a quote of your rates, in PM if you'd prefer. Thanks in advance. |

Quote: Thanks. :) The kind of game isn't really an issue with me. As long as it seems interesting and promising then I'm all for it. I can match any style, perspective, level of detail or whatever else is needed. Let me know what it is exactly you need and I can drum up a price (if I need to even charge at all) A character sprite sheet depends on how many sprites are going to be needed, how complicated/detailed the character is going to be, if the character is going to be set up to wear different clothing, meaning layers of sprites... etc. I mean it could be as simple as Mario Bros for the NES, with some 8-bit flat sprite blobs made for a handful of movements, or it could be an RPG character from a quarter view perspective with 8 directions of movement and many different actions like attacking, running, jumping, crawling, etc... I'll draw spaceships, monsters, hero characters, animals... doesn't really matter to me. I also do tile work (as shown in some of the screenshots) Most of the work I've shown is quite old, since I haven't done anything in a while, though I've noticed that my work tends to improve over time regardless of whether or not I'm actually practicing. I think I just learn new techniques and styles as I evolve in different areas of art and that transfers over to 2D sprites. If I make anything for free I simply ask that I get credited for it. If you don't want to credit me, I better be getting paid. =p |

| Hey man, those sprites are really clean and well animated. I'm a game designer and the team and I are currently in the process of developing a 2D action platformer. My goal from the start with the game was to reinvent what we consider platformers by adding elements from the technical whorehouses of games we're used to. The game is set in medieval japan, and the player is a samurai invading another province. Rhythm plays a large part in the game, as well as a character development system. Really what I'm trying to say is that if this game is done right (and I know a lot of people say this) it'll be really good. As with all games, that's easier said that done. Our team so far is amazing; we have two programmers, two really talented concept artists, a background spriter, an animator and a composer. There are also a few people who drop in and give some suggestions from time to time. What we really need is someone to sprite/animate the characters. We've got concept art for a few of the characters, and more is on the way, but our artist isn't comfortable with making the sprites. So, to clarify, what we need are the character chipsets. You'd have full rights to use this in a portfolio or gallery if need be, and will be fully credited for all of your contributions. This game is actually a kind of tech demo for one my brother and I plan to develop through our developing game studio, Fourth Wall Entertainment. We want this to really showcase the kind of games we're capable of making, especially on low resources. You can find more information here: http://fourthwallentertainment.blogspot.com/ And my email : kade67@gmail.com To conclude, I know our game is going to be awesome, but we just need the people to get it there. We think you'd be a great addition to our team, and really help it get to the next level. |

| Could you find some examples of what you'd want your sprites to look like? The concept art is nice but what are you expecting in terms of character sprites? Also note that while I'm willing to help for free, I'm not really interested in joining any teams. I'm not sure I can commit that much free time to being available enough to help out long term. But if you're just wanting a small set of sprites done up so that you have something to work with, I'd be more interested. Again, I'm not going to be able to do all of your sprite work unless there is very little that needs done. But I could at least help to move someones project further along or give other artists a base to work from. |

| Hey, Thanks for the reply. The character I'm going for is a sort of lone, wandering vagabond type. Long hair, trench coat, etc. The game is going to be almost entirely in a brown/sepia color scheme so the sprite would have to match (brown trench coat, brown/beige/faded blue pants, etc). Here are some reference images I obviously don't own but I think convey my ideas decently: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v170/D34thJoker/20thCenturyboysv03c1p196copy.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v170/D34thJoker/20thCenturyBoysv18c05p098.png The guitar would actually be a nice addition to the sprite such as seen here: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v170/D34thJoker/21stCenturyBoys_c15_017.png Of course that's purely optional and I'm not sure it would even be discernible on a sprite. Something along those lines is what I'm aiming for, using either image as a template would be fine (or even combining them I suppose). I realize stuff like sunglasses wouldn't transfer well to a sprite. You're the artist and the creative freedom here would be yours, as long as the character could pass for something like that. The sprite size I'm going for is at least 64x128 (you can go larger if you like) with it facing in 4 directions (NESW) and at least 2 frames of walking animation (for a total of 12 positions). A single facial expression is fine. The complexity of the sprite doesn't need to be very high since the color scheme is simple and the reference images are also fairly plain. Also, I would make sure to credit you regardless of whether I paid or not. Let me know if this sounds like something you'd like to work on, as well as a cost if applicable. Thanks. |

| The image I have in my head is kind of a mix between Castlevania and Pitfall. Note the fluidity in both of them. I found some examples of both here: Castlevania Picture Castlevania Video Pitfall Pic Pitfall Video Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you'd like to do one character or something that we could use to work off of, then that would be great. Or if you want to make wireframe animations so that we could work off of that, then that would work as well. It's really up to you, but we need all the help we can get. |

Quote: I would say most of those graphics look far too similar to Zelda graphics to be considered original. Edits yes, original, no. Not to take my own thread off topic. I realize that some of my graphics are Zelda influenced but that was because I made it for a game that originally used Zelda graphics, but had to change them a lot until they didn't resemble Zelda enough to be considered a rip. |

Quote: You should probably change that from "if we did" to "when we do", if past Zelda fan projects provide hints as to what Nintendo's actions might be. Might want to start thinking of new names to change to ahead of time, because Nintendo really doesn't like people infringing on their IP. |

| What would be useful to us (and many others) would be as another poster mentioned, a sort of base. not a base tileset, but a base ANIMATED humanoid character. Seeing as you are an animator for nick, you are obviously great at walk cycles and character motion. a single (or maybe 2-3 if you had the time) example of base semi-detailed sprites (nude) then that would give ALOT to the community (as another poster mentioned, right now the only real COMPLETE sprite sets you find are either mega-man or FF based). just the general walking, swinging, etc of the sprites would allow people to "piece" together new sprites. |

Quote: Hi, I don't know if you would find this useful but I found a free png of 2d side view male character outline 'sprites' online here (gamemaker site - can't remember if registration is necessary) http://www.yoyogames.com/extras/resource/file/san1/90/90/male_character_outline_final.png I have edited a bunch some of them to create a simple humanoid pony character for a game. It contains a character standing, walking, running, jumping, falling, crouching, and getting up (so far). cheers, Paul |

| Not to take my own post off topic more... but some of the artwork I have posted is used in a commercial game. It's called Graal Online (www.graalonline.com), which, not surprisingly.... started out as Zelda Online. The game has been out for I believe 10 years or more at this point... undergoing major cosmetic surgery in order for the company to not get sued. So yes, some of my artwork is influenced by Zelda. This is only because the game I made it for was originally a Zelda clone. Later tonight I will post a step by step process of how I made the tree in my first sprite sheet (to show that I didn't just copy a tree from another game, and how to be properly "inspired" and not just ripping. Heck... I'll even show an example of totally redoing a graphic and making it too close to the original, if that will help clear up anything. I assure you though, I can make any artwork to match any game style... and isn't that what game artists need to be able to do? |

Here's how I made the tree... Note that the faded tree tiles in the image are still different from the Zelda tree. I believe that tree was the 2nd or 3rd remake to make it look less Zelda-like. If you compare my tree to the Zelda tree, I think it's fair to assume that they are nothing alike except they fit in the same tile space.![]() |
