The Daily GameDev.Net

On slow news days like today, I always try to remind myself that it may not actually be a bad thing, even if I don't have much in the way of great material for the daily!

Video games outsold DVD and Blu-ray for the first time. In 2008 video game sales grew 20 per cent, to USD 32 billion, which according to Media Control GfK International was driven by the popularity of Nintendo Wii. In the meantime, combined DVD and Blu-ray sales fell 6 per cent, to USD 29 billion. The video games industry has also set a new record in the US for sales of software and hardware, with 2008's level topping USD 21 billion across the year, with almost a quarter of that coming in December.

Video game magazines, like magazines of other industry's are not doing so great in the current tough economic times. An article over at Gamesindustry.biz points to the fact that Future Publishing, publisher of the official PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo magazines, PC Gamer, PC Zone and Edge is not doing so well. The publisher has blamed a decline in the PC gaming market and tough advertising competition in the US for a difficult three months for its portfolio of games magazines. With EGM closing earlier this month and PC magazine going entirely online at the end of 2008 is this really a sign of the hard fiscal times, or a result of the digital media age.

And for some extra goodness:
Jobling fears "decimation" of UK developer scene
Games presence up 50 per cent at NY Comic Con
Rumor: PSP2 Coming Soon
Final Fantasy XIII trailer shows gameplay

Our video link today is a trailer for the upcoming movie Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li starring the beautiful and talented Kristen Kreuk.

Seems the PC gaming market is everybody's favorite scapegoat to blame rather than their own business. These magazines having problems are just a sign of the digital media age as you say. Quite frankly all of their content has been online, free with ad-support, in multiple locations for a long time now. I'm surprised they've lasted this long frankly.

I'm worried that Street Fighter will be chopped-up crap in terms of fight scenes. Does Kristen Kreuk have any sort of martial arts background at all?

On her IMDB page it says that she did martial arts in high school and has a purple belt in karate. I hope they nail those actions scenes, you're right, it could ruin the whole thing otherwise.

well that's promising. I was hoping they had chosen her for more than her hotness. Still, after seeing the travesty they made of Jason Statham's fight scenes in Transporter 3 I'm now wary of the director for this film. I haven't seen any of the films he directed, and the cinematography credits he has don't include any martial arts films that I've seen either. So... back to nail biting :P
