The Daily GameDev.Net

I'm switching things up a little today, because I didn't feel like covering industry specific news for once (read, there wasn't much going on) and because there's nothing really techie to talk about right now. I'm going to cover purely news about video games. I know. I know, its rather different but please bare with me.

The demo for the well anticipated Resident Evil 5 has had over four million downloads for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The demo was initially released on December 5th for Xbox 360 in Japan, where it was downloaded by over 53 percent of members. An Xbox 360 trial was also made available in North America and Europe starting January 26th. The PlayStation 3 version of the downloadable Resident Evil 5 demo was released in all major territories on February 2nd. Resident Evil 5 is due for release simultaneously on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on March 5th in Japan, and on March 13th in North America and Europe. The Japanese release will be accompanied by PS3 and Xbox 360 hardware bundles, with the PS3 version including an 80GB PlayStation 3 system branded with the Biohazard logo (the Resident Evil series' title in Japan) and text, among other items.

John Carmack has said that Pi Studios, the developers behind the Xbox Live Arcade release of classic multiplayer shooter Quake 3 Arena is "actually very close to finishing that up." News of Quake 3 Arena was officially confirmed at QuakeCon over 18 months ago but very little has been heard about the title since. He didn't identify any specific reasons for the delay, but said that the developer had "different things come up at different times".

Good news for PSP owners! The PSP is going to see several great new releases in the coming months as LittleBigPlanet, Rock Band Unplugged, MotorStorm Arctic Edge and Assassin's Creed. Both LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm Arctic Edge are scheduled to be released on the handheld this fall, Assasins Creed and Rock band are scheduled for release at the end of the year.

I haven't played Resident Evil since the nineties, but the buzz generated from the series intrigues me, even though I'm not an avid follower.

When I'm die-hard about a franchise, I don't necessarily want anything to change, but the reinvention of games such as Resident Evil, and even Final Fantasy, gladdens me. I feel good about their "progression" because it's a sign of growth and improvement, which is understandably hard to swallow for some people. What's important is that they don't stagnate, an inevitable fate in the absence change. A good song writer doesn't use the same note over and over without just cause (i.e. a strong cadence). It's necessary for a superb composer to be able to modulate over a key without changing the foundation of a song. I think the same principle can be applied to games. Variation is essential, so long as there are no jarring changes.

Shit, I just realized that reboot probably means returning back to the old style. Even so, a good game can take the guise of nearly any style, if done well. If I can anticipate the direction that the series will take, I expect terror, a fear that cannot be capture by "The Unborn" or "The Grudge."
