I haven't played Resident Evil since the nineties, but the buzz generated from the series intrigues me, even though I'm not an avid follower.
When I'm die-hard about a franchise, I don't necessarily want anything to change, but the reinvention of games such as Resident Evil, and even Final Fantasy, gladdens me. I feel good about their "progression" because it's a sign of growth and improvement, which is understandably hard to swallow for some people. What's important is that they don't stagnate, an inevitable fate in the absence change. A good song writer doesn't use the same note over and over without just cause (i.e. a strong cadence). It's necessary for a superb composer to be able to modulate over a key without changing the foundation of a song. I think the same principle can be applied to games. Variation is essential, so long as there are no jarring changes.
Shit, I just realized that reboot probably means returning back to the old style. Even so, a good game can take the guise of nearly any style, if done well. If I can anticipate the direction that the series will take, I expect terror, a fear that cannot be capture by "The Unborn" or "The Grudge."
