I've been trialling Visual Assist X by Whole Tomato Software, which provides refactoring and better intellisense in Visual C++. My trial is up and it will cost me either $99 or $200+ to get a license (I work professionally from home so I insist on buying licenses for things I use). That's a bit more than I want to pay and I wondered if there are any credible competitors out there? Any recommendations?

visual sidekick has some of the feature (http://www.visualsidekick.com/Syntaxia/HomePage.php) but as far as I know Visual Assist is by far the best tool available.

As far as Visual Studio plugins go, you won't find anything better for C++. If you're open to moving to other editors, though, some folks on my team use SlickEdit and swear by it. I haven't used it myself, though.

DevExpress offers a CodeRush and Refactor! Pro for a similar price. It is more tailored to the .net libraries than raw C++, but it has many refactorings and other tools that make it quite useful. I like to use it along side Visual Assist. Note that Microsoft licensed a subset of their Refactor! product that ships with Visual Studio. For products like these the price of $100-$200 seems completely reasonable to me. When considering the hours saved, even on my hobby development, they are well worth the cost.
