[MMO] Yet Another MMO - Iroth - LFM 2D Character Artist, Programmer
Post New Topic  Post Reply
Because this board needs more MMO projects, right?

Team name: Evertras Studios (NOT a registered company)

Project name: Iroth

Brief description: Iroth is a tongue-in-cheek fantasy top-down 2D MMO that creates a generally light, satirical atmosphere backed up by otherwise serious mechanics and game play. The setting is serious: a remote island that is being flooded with refugees from a great war looking to rebuild. The atmosphere once you get there becomes much lighter.

The world and the mechanics are both starting small. All MMOs are enormous. Even a small MMO is enormous compared to a normal single player game, so we'd be kidding ourselves if we tried to do anything remotely big with it. Instead, we're building a basic (but solid and functional) foundation and expanding from there.

This is a project that has required and will continue to require a significant amount of hard work from those involved, but that's part of the satisfaction. After all, anyone that tells you making a game (or heaven forbid an MMO) is easy is not someone you want to do a project with. ;)

If you're looking to get in on the ground floor of a grounded, practical MMO (hah), this is the time and place. No delusions of grandeur here. No vague impossible promises. Let's make this a GameDev success story for real.

Target aim: If this turns out to the ideal, $5/month subscription and/or microtransactions.

Compensation: None. This is a learning experience for people to get a "real" project under their belt. If the game development gods shine on us and we somehow start making money, we might have the makings of a small company (and I'm very much keeping my eyes on that), but the realistic expectation is simply that our portfolios are very shiny when we come out of this.

Technology:
DirectX (2D only) for PC, nothing fancy
FMOD (will pay out of my own pocket for a professional license down the line if needed)

Talent needed:
General requirements:
- Sense of humor
- Personal drive
- Substantial free time and motivation
- Eager for constructive criticism and desire to improve
- Desire for real experience on a team
- Willingness to communicate daily on our IRC channel with the rest of the team (if you drop off the face of the earth, I'll assume you've dropped off the project)
- Willingness to ask questions and speak up
- Sanity and a friendly, grounded personality
- Experience NOT necessary, but will provide test if none given
- Ability to poke fun at your boss when he does stupid things a plus

2D Artist Requirements:
- All general requirements above plus...
- General flexibility
- Simplistic/cartoonish shading and styling (Samples: Props, Ooze, Character concept)
- 3D artists that convert to 2D are fine as long as you can match the style well

Programmer Requirements:
- All general requirements above plus...
- Very solid C++ and OOP skills
- Willingness to reasonably conform to coding standards
- Ability to jump into a somewhat large existing code base

The above may have come off as slightly strict, but I've learned I need to give a bit better of a filter. :)

If you're not able to really fit into any of the above but are still interested, feel free to send me an e-mail and check if you could contribute in some other way. I'm always open to ideas and welcome productive help, but obviously I can't make any promises.

Current Team structure:
Myself - Supreme overlord and lead programmer
Kody - Web designer
Cameron, Blake - Designers
Marc, Josh - Programmers
Shawna - Artist
Evan - Composer
David - Sound effects

Website:
www.evertras-studios.com

Pretty much just forums for now, and it'll stay that way for a while. Once we have content that isn't programmer art test levels, we'll get some more up there.

Contacts:
evertras@evertras-studios.com

Feel free to contact me with any questions at all.

Previous Work by Team:
I have experience shipping two commercial GBA games as lead engineer, as well as working on multiple other titles for GBA/DS in more minor roles. I know what it takes to get a project done on time and on budget, and I know how to run one effectively.

For design experience, I ran the 4th most popular persistent world for Neverwinter Nights for four years. I'm also one of the top movie makers on warcraftmovies.com, with nearly a million downloads combined (with ~500k from the now defunct curse.com video section, ~500k downloads or so total on WCM). I know what entertains people and I want to bring that to life in a new way.

Additional Info:
The first quest is "Holy #*#$, goblins!" Seriously, who wouldn't want to play this?

I'm serious about making this work. Yeah, yeah, you've heard that before. Just look at what we've done so far by going through the thread and hopefully you'll see I actually mean it.

Feedback:
ANY

Have a bit of artistic interest, could use some more engineering interest. :D

This looks really promising. Too bad you're not looking for any composers, otherwise I'd put in a bid. Best of luck! :)

Unfortunately I think we're already all right on that front, but definitely appreciate the interest! :)

There are a lot of good lone wolves out there. You are discarding a lot of options with this sentence. All programmers love to work with others, but that is not always possible due to incompatible characters or gap in skill. Anyway you won't find a ready made team of X programmers ready to work for you. What you will find is lone individuals and try to make them work together.
Apart from that I like your style and your clear objective. I would be applying for developer in this project if I wasn't in a team already.

I know there are plenty of great programmers out there that are "lone wolves". I also know I'm not going to get a set of programmers that are ready to go as a team off the bat. I guess I should elaborate a bit if I wasn't clear. :)

I'm looking for people that WANT to work as part of a team. I don't want people that think they can do everything and try to, stepping on other toes in the process. People are going to be working on separate components, but they need to be ready to rely on each other to see the whole game complete.

    Does that make sense? :(

    (edit)

After a bit of thought I updated the initial post. You're right, I don't think I came across as I intended. I appreciate the feedback!

We seem to have suckered in a designer.

I would love to work on this project. I'm pretty experienced with C++ and I have some experience with DirectX as well.
I did a bit of work towards making a similar project on my own but I realized that I needed a team and more experience to complete it. Hopefully working on and completing this project will give me more experience and skills.

Toss me an e-mail and we'll talk. Let me know what you can do and what you've done in the past.

All right, should be ok on programmers for now actually. Still need another artist or two. If we don't get one soon I'll have to release hideous screenshots filled with programmer art to guilt you in.

User Rating: 1022   |  Rate This User  Send Private MessageView Profile Report this Post to a Moderator | Link

I would actually like to see these screenshots just to know what you are kind of going before. It sounds interesting and you seem to have experience, but artists all have to use similar styles and without knowing any artist's style, you may be attracting conflicting forces. Getting artists with similar skills is very difficult usually, and some artists may leave during the project, meaning new artists will have to conform to the original artists, which can be difficult. I've dealt with it.

Well, when I mentioned programmer art I was talking more along the lines of terribad stick figures in MS Paint with goofy faces. I know artists can't really mesh styles perfectly together 99% of the time, and the psuedo-solution there is have them work on different aspects (tileset, characters/monsters, UI elements being the main splits I think). Coherency would be nice throughout the game, but as long as different elements look reasonably similar we can get away with a little style gap and no one will notice.

That's what our current artist is working on right now, and that's the kind of style I think I'd like to go for overall.

Saddens me I can be of no use on this project, I'm a C# programmer. But I'll follow it! it definitely sounds like something I would like to play

That's very encouraging to hear. :D

Still need another artist or two for sure. Don't make me post my own art.

If that doesn't motivate some artists to make something new, I don't know what will.

I'm interested in the sound design spot, at least for the prototyping phase for now.

    Updated. :)

Come on now artists, you don't want a game looking like that, do you? DO YOU?!

User Rating: 1022   |  Rate This User  Send Private MessageView Profile Report this Post to a Moderator | Link

I *may* be able to help you a bit as an artist and writer but my time is fairly limited. Also, I won't demand compensation. Typically I work on icons and I only use free programs so I have to do everything manually (no plugins). I am also experience at pixel art. I can do sprites and terrain, too. Let me know if you still need my help.

User Rating: 1032   |  Rate This User  Send Private MessageView Profile Report this Post to a Moderator | Link

Well, we're certainly going to need icons for abilities and items. If you'd feel comfortable doing that, that seems like it'd be a good fit for what you described and would definitely be useful without being horribly time consuming. E-mail me if you're interested. :)

That's our progress after about 2 weeks of work. Client/server is working with multiple connections just fine, and chat to boot. Combat is starting to take more shape now as we get abilities in.

We've done a lot in 2 weeks, but we have a LOT more to go. Party party join us join us!

That's a lot of progress for 2 weeks!! Congratulations. How many programmers you have?

Thanks! We currently have four programmers including myself, could use one more just because most of the others are squeezed for time with school/work. :)
