| 2D Boy is one year old this week, so they have a name your own price sale going on for World of Goo for PC, Mac, and Linux. Looking forward to getting my native Linux version tonight! I'm considering going with $5 to match the Direct2Drive sale that I wanted to get in on but couldn't because it was Windows only. Just don't be a jerk and pay $0.01 like I know a bunch of people will do. With Paypal you'll have to pay at least $0.32 for 2D Boy to get any money at all ($0.01 in that case). Anything less and you're just donating to Paypal and costing 2D Boy bandwidth. | ||||

| Good story. I forgot to add that into the cut. It's an interesting idea - it'd be interesting to see how many people actually pay sensible prices. If it took off, I could see a few others doing it - it's a huge gamble for bigger games though. | ||||

Quote: I went with $5, for the same reason. There were downloads for Windows, Mac, and Linux. I'm surprised by the iPhone piracy rates. I think it would take more effort to find and download the games than it would be worth to save a few bucks. I guess people will still pirate games, regardless of price. But, in China, piracy just seems to be part of the culture; whereas in other parts of the world it's considered stealing.

Quote: They were quick about releasing piracy numbers, so I imagine they'll have a nice writeup of average price, percentage of people that paid a nickel or less, number of people who paid more than normal price (hey, there are some crazy folk out there), etc. There are other interesting statistics that we'll probably never find out, for example in one forum discussion alone I noted several people who paid some money even though they had already illegally obtained the game. As for viability as a business model, I think you definitely need name recognition and a more reasonable minimum donation (read: not $0.01). I also think the limited time offer is a good idea, as the average price paid might tend towards zero otherwise.. The only data point I know about for a commercial offering was Radiohead's Name Your Own Price deal, which by most accounts was very successful. Their previous albums sold in the low hundred thousands, while their NYOP album "In Rainbows" sold three million, making more profit just on pre-release sales than they made on their previous album total. It boosted them to number 1 on Billboard charts and scored them two Grammy awards, both of which undoubtedly earned them more sales as well. | AMD getting the XBox 360 refresh contract makes perfect sense. I am not sure why it's being treated as such a hush hush rumor. Why would they refresh the 360 with a different GPU that wasn't backwards compatible? Especially since AMD has gotten their act together on the graphics side finally.
