Future of the forum system?

I was wondering if gamedev.net has ever considering changing to a different forum system. As it is now, it is difficult to use some features that are clearly marked on other forums, such as clickable links to other sites. Even now, I don't know how to create them, but I know it is possible since other people create them (maybe this could be something that lower-post-count users don't have access to?). And while it looks like I have not been here long, I have been around since about 2002 under several user names that I always forget that were set up with disposable email addresses. Anyway, have there ever been any talks about maybe changing to something like PHPBB2/3, or something like it? Because I like to approach things like this from both angles, here are some pros and cons I could think of off the top of my head: Pros: 1. Easier interface for users, giving them clickable buttons for such functions as bolding, italicizing and linking. 2. More modern features, such as advanced friendlists, ignore, in-post emoticon buttons, etc. 3. Newer code will likely result in faster forum execution times. Cons: 1. Changing an iconic forum such as gamedev risks upsetting or confusing portions of the community. 2. Changing to a more common forum system risks losing uniqueness and identity. 3. There are always risks for system failures and losses of data when moving forum engines or database systems.

There's a couple of people working on a total rewrite of the forum software, so I expect many new features will be available in that release. Having said that, the software allows many HTML elements directly, in particular <a href="..."> for links works. my blog

Quote: Well, that is cool about the forum updates. And yes, I think that is what confused me, because I am used to forum coding, such as My Link. I think a lot of people are used to those types of links these days as well. Thanks for the info! :) |

How to make links is in the FAQ ;) There is an entire site re-write going on at the moment, which includes new forums. Pretty sure they will be custom again, not off-the-shelf like PHPBB.
