 BEWARE of Edge Games!
Post New Topic  Post Reply
Beware young developers in search of a job, Tim Langdell is trying to recruit you!

Those who have followed the saga of Edge Games and Tim Langdell know that Langdell is desperately attempting to demonstrate to the USPTO that his company is active in order to avoid losing his fraudulently-obtained trademarks. Publisher EA is currently working to have those trademarks cancelled and, if there is justice in the world, EA will succeed.

You are urged to review the recent history of Edge Games/Tim Langdell, archived here:
http://chaosedge.wordpress.com/
http://www.tigsource.com/pages/edge-games

Here are some of Langdell's recent listings:

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/sof/1448178319.html

It's very important that you do not reply to Edge Games ads, nor attempt to get work from him. Please warn your friends and colleagues who may not have heard about him yet. If you want a game job, look on a LEGITIMATE game job site like Gamasutra.

EDGE GAMES IS A ONE-MAN SCAM OPERATION, NOT A TRUE PUBLISHER OR DEVELOPER.

I have to admit that it sure looks like him. The constant capitalization of "EDGE", the fact that no real skills are needed (you can see that they say things like "-blank- is good, but not required" over and over), and no real requirements are added.

We are also seeking completed, or nearly completed, games for the iPhone.

Trying to add some value to his company in regards to the Mobigames case?

My inclination is that no one would be crazy enough to name a new startup 'EDGE Games' after all the publicity Langdell has managed to receive...

If he is hiring just to port Bobby Bearing to iPhone then it doesn't sound like a great opportunity for a budding game developer.
However, if the racers game he claims is in development is actually being put on consoles such as PS3 and 360 (and he has the licenses and kits to do it) then I reckon it is definitely worth applying if you are on the lookout for a job.
Chances are he is indeed just porting old games to iPhone to make some quick cash, and there is zero work being done on consoles, but that isn't a reason to not apply and potentially get an interview. Then you could see for yourself what he has in development and make an informed decision instead of avoiding him like the plague based on the hatred he receives on the internet.

All the best,
ViLiO

Maybe someone can go in under cover and find out the truth about the games he has "in development" :)

Doesn't Langdell also have a history of cheating employees out of their pay?

Sort of like a real-life James Bond of game development. I'll take the job, only thing I ask for is hazard pay subsidized through community donations ... I assume the first step would be to find the nearest bathroom in EDGE headquarters with a ventilation duct that can easily be accessed by first rappelling off the edge of a dam.

You would be referring to the time he moved to a completely different country (the US) to avoid paying developers he worked with in the UK, even after they sued Langdell's company and won. I don't know how that works, but that's the story.

Go to Linkedin.com. If you work in the games industry (or want to work in it) and don't yet have a profile, by all means create one. Linkedin is a huge worldwide network with over 50 million registered users and is a fantastic tool to help build your network and drive your career or find a new job.

If you've got a Linkedin account, look at one of your connections' profiles. If they provide a work history, there will be links to the companies they worked at just below the title they held at that company. If you click on the company name, you can see everyone else on Linkedin who is currently working or has ever worked there.

Searching for "EDGE Games" will get you everyone who uses the word "edge" OR "games" anywhere in their profile so it's not very effective. This is because "edge" and "games" are exceedingly common words, unlike, for example, "nintendo" or "mobigames".

Here's a better way: if you are logged in, you can view Tim Langdell's full profile (http://www.linkedin.com/pub/tim-langdell/4/4a3/5a7). Scroll down to his entry as Chairman, Edge Games. Click on the "Edge Games" link below the word "Chairman" to see who else is currently working or has ever worked there.

For those who don't want to register (or in case Timmy hides his profile), there are 8 results:
1) Tim Langdell (whom we all know and despise)
2) DoP Camera Operator at Youth Games (at The Underground Edge, not affiliated with Edge Games)
3) VP Game Development at Edge Games (empty profile, 0 connections, hidden)
4) Mathew Kumar (Freelance Games Journalist for Edge Magazine, not affiliated with Edge Games)
5) Simon Parkin (Freelance Games Journalist for Edge Magazine, not affiliated with Edge Games)
6) Wholesale Rep for Over the Edge Games (not affiliated with Edge Games)
7) Owner, Over the Edge Games (not affiliated with Edge Games)
8) Jeremy Bishop, Edge Digital Games (not affiliated with Edge Games)

So we have a company that supposedly has been in business for over 30 years, yet out of over 50 million people, not one single verifiable person besides Tim Langdell claims to have ever worked at EDGE Games. (The hidden VP Game Dev profile with 0 connections is not verifiable).

There's a slim possibility that every single person who has ever worked there is so ashamed of that fact that they intentionally omitted the experience from their profiles, or perhaps the experience was so gut-wrenchingly horrifying they just want to forget it ever happened. It is also possible that no other past or present Edge Games employees anywhere in the world have profiles on Linkedin, though for a span of 30 years of albeit dubious business, that seems very unlikely. This leaves us with the final, most likely conclusion: that Edge Games is a one man operation. That is to say that Tim Langdell == Edge Games, Inc.

Of course, if I'd worked for Edge Games I'd be too ashamed to admit it too. ;) (I didn't.)

I'm going to create a petition to convince The Edge to sue Tim Langdell.

So I was in the shower earlier - doing a little bit of man-scaping, when I glanced at the bottle of shaving gel and OMG...

... wait, what? You think that EA winning any legal battles is a good thing? EA has been the bain of gamers and indie developers for the last 20 years. Sure they had some innovative stuff when they were starting but as of right now they are the biggest evil in terms of invading consumer's privacy by secretly installing spyware and producing one crappy title after the next.

If this Tim Langdell is truly a fraud, so be it. But please do not use EA as a beacon of justice -- that couldn't be farther from the truth (despite them being in the right).

Well, EA is surely the lesser of two evils. If anyone could null the trademark Langdell has on "edge", it would be EA's muscle.

And as far as EA being an awful company, I don't particularly fault them for anything. Apparently, the spyware issue was an in-game ad bot designed to create region-specific ads to "increase the realism" of the games. They made an announcement that they were going to be doing that ahead of time, so I have no real problem with that. And as far as them putting out "one crappy game after another", that is a matter of opinion. I am not a big sports fan, nor do I play many console games, so I am not very familiar with many of their games in the last few years, but they tend to do quite well.

I'm leery of anything on Craigs LIst. (Photography scams are big on there) now I see its game dev scams too.

This guy sounds like a Primerica sort of deal. You develop stuff for him and he takes the money and doesnt pay you.

I have seen all manner of employment and apartment rental scams on craigslist, but what is a photography scam - unpaid modelling gigs, or some such?

That's what I am wondering, too. Never heard of a photography scam. From the context, I am wondering if maybe he meant scam jobs for photographers.

I've seen a lot of modeling gigs advertised on Craigslist. That could be what he's talking about. Also, pretty much anything having to do with data entry.
