Weekend Reading: Tales from Journal Land

Entries from 11/6 - 11/12

Journal Land Pick of the Week

nerd_boy's Journal - Everyone wave good bye to nerd_boy, at least for the time being as he ships off to the Air Force Academy in a few months and is suspending all game dev activity both in general and here on the forums. Say hi to Sir Sapo while you're out there! While I'm saddened at the loss (even temporary) of another GDNet member, I'm also happy to know someone else who maybe someday could give me a ride in a jet. Right? Pleez? Good luck and be safe!

From the Staff

  • Gaiiden's Scroll - A new twitter policy for conference tweeting on @gdevnet is crushed underfoot when I realize that twitter all of the sudden no longer supports the feature I was planning to exploit. Fail :(

Project Updates

  • Journal of lucius - lucius returns to Journal Land to talk about his ambitious new project "Alien Awakening", and open-ended game that places you in an alien body on an alien world with its own people, language, etc. How'd this happen? How do you get home? Check his posts later in the week too for more details

  • Journal of Lethargic Programmers - cameni has another example of horizontal displacement action in his Outerra engine, with plenty of pretty pictures and even an interactive demo.

  • Journal of EnemyBoss - EnemyBoss created a game pitch for a local contest, based upon the classic game Metal Storm

  • Tesseract's Game Development Journal - Tesseract has been brought out of retirement by the Unnoficial Four Elements Contest - awesome and good luck!

  • Radioactive-Software - dgreen02 blows up your interweb pipes with another massive journal update as he gears up towards the second Beta release of Warbots Online.

  • Journal of matt_j - matt_j has some new screens of game, which he is porting over to the iPhone

Game Dev Stuffs

  • DruinkJournal - Evil Steve has officially announced that he is continuing his popular series of journal articles dedicated to learning DX9, so make sure you bug him with thoughts and ideas on what he should start covering again. His lineup for Tutorial 6 includes: X meshes, wrapped in a Mesh class; maybe vertex shaders; maybe stencil buffers?

  • Merry Prankster Games - gdunbar shares links on items in RPGs, levelling up in an RPG and do's and don'ts for RPG designers, the danger of RPG sidequests, and continuation of a series of highly recommended (you guessed it) RPG articles by Andrew Doull

Heh. Figured I'd make one last check in to check the comments of my journal post and see if I made the weekend readings. Didn't figure I'd make the pick of the week. Must be a slow week.

Anywho, just wanted to comment/clarify that I'm not going to the USAF Academy. That's for commissioned officers. I'm going in as enrolled, not officer. So you probably won't be getting that jet ride until if/when I become an officer and not just an enlisted. The closest I'm likely to get to flying the jets will be those little remote-controlled spy planes for Intelligence.

For reals, this'll be my last post for a year. XD Peace.
