I find that the language question is most important regarding where you want to publish your game.
Java for android.
C/C++ for iPhone and AAA games.
Or you can use Engines instead of APIs.
Unity and UDK have their own languages embedded into the engine. They give you great multiplatform capabilities, and very easy multimedia support (file imports for example). Problem is they cost money if you go commercial...
