Summary:
After a whirlwind tour of Windows programming you will learn how to use genetic algorithms for optimization, path-finding, and evolving control sequences for your game agents. After learning the basics of neural networks, AI Techniques for Game Programming will demonstrate how you can evolve neural motion controllers for your game agents, and how neural networks may be applied to obstacle avoidance and map exploration. You will learn about backpropagation and pattern recognition and discover how to train a network to recognize mouse gestures. Finally, the book explains state-of-the-art techniques for creating neural networks with dynamic topologies.

Great book, everything is very clear, shows you how to implement Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms step by step, and all with variations on how should it be implemented depending on the problem you want to solve...

the only cons i would found is that some times it feels the autor was forced to fill out all the 400 pages on it... when the topic could be covered on may be 300 ...
Nice and easy to follow treatment of neural networks and genetic algorithms. Most books on this subject are very heavy on the math, but with this one a highschool student with not too many math skills would be able to implement a simple learning algorithm for his next game project. It's too bad that the first 85 pages are lost on a simple windows introduction again, especially since this book only has about 400 pages. But still a very good effort.. maybe we'll see more games actually using neural nets and genetic algorithms now :)
In this book, you will find a great explanation about genetic algorithms and artificial neural networks. The author shows them in plain english without mathematical embroils which mess the things. I've found it very useful to some subjects of my university, like Machine Learning, Simulation of Biological Systems, Genetic Programming.
Wow! This book was EXACTLY what I was looking for! The text is well written, easy to follow, and most of all relevant. In addition, while the focus of the book is primarily on bot navigation (exploration and obstacle avoidance) the principles discussed are fully transferrable to other domains. I work in the field of Pattern Recognition and have been using Neural Nets as classifier systems. The techniques discussed in this book have already improved the overall quality of the classifiers I have been able to develop, and I've only just begun integrating into our existing framework.

I've read Mat's Genetic Algorithm and Neural Net tutorials, and this book builds on those with excellent expansions. The sample applications ran the first time and I never encountered an error.

If you have any interest at all in the hybridization of Neural Net and Evolutionary Programming techniques, Mat's tutorials will whet your appetite and this book will fill you with ideas. I only reserve myself to a 9 due to my fear that I'm overzealous of the technology!!! Once I read the book a second time, I may upgrade my score.
This book is very clearly written, and gives good, concrete examples that are pertinant to game programming. No wasting time trying to solve pointless math equations here! Also, each chapter contains a different (or more advanced) AI application showing off the aspect of AI being covered very nicely! Before you write yet another FSM to handle AI, *read this book*!
